Throat and nasal issues?
Hello Dr.
Cheng, I have been taking medication for high blood pressure for about ten years and have been on insomnia medication for nearly four years.
Recently, I have been experiencing a bitter taste in my throat after taking my medication, which I didn't have before.
I also occasionally have a runny nose and nasal congestion.
After taking my medication before bed and lying down, I still experience nasal congestion, and it feels like my throat is a bit constricted.
Additionally, I feel like I might be experiencing some acid reflux.

Hello, it may be related to gastroesophageal reflux or post-nasal drip.
If it persists without improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing a combination of symptoms that may be related to your ENT (ear, nose, and throat) health, as well as possibly being influenced by your medications for high blood pressure and insomnia. Let's break down your symptoms and explore potential causes and solutions.
Symptoms Overview
1. Throat Pain and Bitter Taste: The bitter taste in your throat could be due to several factors. One possibility is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to irritation and a bitter taste. This can also cause a sensation of a lump in the throat, known as globus sensation.
2. Nasal Congestion and Runny Nose: These symptoms can be indicative of allergic rhinitis or sinusitis. Allergies can cause inflammation in the nasal passages, leading to congestion and a runny nose. Additionally, if you have a history of nasal issues, such as chronic sinusitis, this could also contribute to your symptoms.
3. Medication Side Effects: Some medications, particularly those for high blood pressure, can have side effects that include dry mouth and throat irritation. If you are taking antihypertensive medications, it’s worth discussing with your doctor whether they could be contributing to your throat discomfort and nasal symptoms.
4. Sleep Position and Environment: If you are experiencing nasal congestion when lying down, it could be related to your sleeping position or the environment (such as allergens in your bedroom). Elevating your head while sleeping or using a humidifier may help alleviate some of the congestion.
Recommendations
1. Consult Your Doctor: Given your ongoing symptoms, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend an evaluation by an ENT specialist to assess your throat and nasal passages more thoroughly.
2. Consider Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected, allergy testing can help identify specific triggers. This can lead to targeted treatment, such as antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids.
3. Evaluate Your Medications: Discuss your current medications with your doctor. They may consider adjusting your treatment plan if your medications are contributing to your symptoms.
4. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Diet: If GERD is suspected, dietary changes may be necessary. Avoiding spicy, acidic, or fatty foods, especially before bedtime, can help reduce reflux symptoms.
- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus and alleviate throat discomfort.
- Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or a neti pot can help clear nasal congestion and soothe irritated nasal passages.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their severity, and any potential triggers. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause.
Conclusion
Your symptoms of throat discomfort, nasal congestion, and bitter taste may be interconnected and influenced by various factors, including medication side effects and possible underlying conditions such as GERD or allergies. It’s crucial to work closely with your healthcare provider to identify the root cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan. By addressing these symptoms holistically, you can improve your overall quality of life and well-being.
