About pregnancy test strips?
I would like to ask about my menstrual cycle.
It has been regular from December to February—on December 10, January 13, and February 11! However, my period has not arrived yet as of March 18.
So, I bought a pregnancy test yesterday, and it showed one line, but after a few minutes, a faint second line appeared! This morning at 12:30, I bought another pregnancy test, and it showed one line.
I thought it would be more accurate to visit a gynecologist, but the result was negative for pregnancy.
Can you please clarify whether this means I am pregnant or not? Also, why did I see two lines? Thank you!
Ms. M, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/18

Hello, a single line usually indicates that you are not pregnant; it may have been a false positive before.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to interpreting pregnancy test results, the appearance of two lines can be quite confusing, especially when the results seem inconsistent. In your case, it sounds like you have experienced a situation where a pregnancy test showed one line initially, and then a faint second line appeared after a few minutes. The next day, another test showed only one line. This can lead to uncertainty about whether you are pregnant or not.
To clarify, most home pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. This hormone is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. A positive result is typically indicated by two lines: one line is the control line, which shows that the test is working, and the second line indicates the presence of hCG, suggesting pregnancy.
However, there are several factors that can affect the accuracy of these tests:
1. Timing of the Test: If you take a pregnancy test too early, there may not be enough hCG in your urine to produce a positive result. It’s generally recommended to wait until at least the first day of your missed period for the most accurate results.
2. Dilution of Urine: The concentration of hCG can vary throughout the day. Testing with your first morning urine is usually the best practice because it is more concentrated, which increases the chances of detecting hCG if you are pregnant.
3. Evaporation Lines: Sometimes, a faint line can appear after the recommended reading time due to evaporation of the urine on the test strip. This line is not an indication of pregnancy.
4. Chemical Pregnancy: In some cases, a test may show a positive result due to a very early miscarriage, known as a chemical pregnancy. This occurs when a fertilized egg implants but does not develop properly, leading to a drop in hCG levels.
5. Residual hCG: If you have recently been pregnant or have undergone a procedure like a miscarriage or abortion, residual hCG can remain in your system for some time, leading to a positive test result even if you are not currently pregnant.
Given your situation, where you had a normal menstrual cycle from December to February and then missed your period in March, it is advisable to follow up with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test, which is more sensitive and can detect lower levels of hCG than home urine tests. This will provide a clearer answer regarding whether you are pregnant or if there are other factors at play.
In summary, while two lines on a pregnancy test typically indicate pregnancy, the context of your menstrual cycle, the timing of the test, and the possibility of residual hCG or other factors must be considered. If you are still uncertain or if your period does not arrive soon, consulting with a healthcare professional is the best course of action. They can provide guidance, perform further testing, and help you understand your reproductive health better.
