Symptoms after varicocele surgery?

Hello, doctor.
I had surgery four days ago, with four incisions on the left side and two on the right.
I have been resting until today when I returned to work.
However, due to work-related activities, I walked quite a bit today and noticed significant swelling.
Upon visual inspection, I observed noticeable edema in the genital area as well as the appearance of the vulva, but I do not feel any pain.
I would like to know if this is a normal phenomenon and if I need to seek medical attention immediately.
Thank you for your time in responding.

It sounds okay, but it is still recommended to follow up with the original urology department.

More Info

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is common to experience a range of post-operative symptoms, including swelling and discomfort in the affected area. Given that you had the surgery just four days ago, it is not unusual to notice some swelling in the scrotum and surrounding areas, especially after increased physical activity, such as walking more than usual.

1. Swelling: Post-operative swelling is a normal part of the healing process. The body responds to surgery by increasing blood flow to the area, which can lead to edema (swelling). This is particularly common in surgeries involving the reproductive organs, as the area is highly vascularized. The fact that you are not experiencing significant pain is a positive sign, as severe pain could indicate complications such as infection or hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels).

2. Monitoring Symptoms: It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the swelling continues to increase, or if you start to experience pain, redness, or warmth in the area, these could be signs of a complication that would warrant immediate medical attention. Additionally, if you notice any changes in your urinary habits or any unusual discharge, you should consult your physician.

3. Rest and Recovery: It is crucial to allow your body adequate time to heal. While it may be tempting to return to normal activities, especially if you feel well, it is advisable to limit physical exertion for at least a week or two post-surgery. This includes avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or any activities that could strain the surgical site.

4. Follow-Up Care: Most surgeons will schedule a follow-up appointment within a few weeks after the procedure to assess healing and address any concerns. If you have not been given a follow-up appointment, or if you feel uncertain about your recovery, it is wise to reach out to your surgeon's office for guidance. They can provide specific recommendations based on your individual situation.

5. When to Seek Help: If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek medical attention promptly:
- Increasing pain or discomfort in the surgical area
- Significant swelling that does not improve with rest
- Fever or chills, which could indicate an infection
- Changes in urination, such as pain or difficulty
In summary, while some swelling and discomfort are expected after varicocele surgery, it is essential to listen to your body and take appropriate measures to ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your health and recovery are the top priority, and maintaining open communication with your medical team is key to a successful post-operative experience.
