The foreskin has small bumps?
Hello, doctor! I have small, dense, painless, and itchy-like bumps on the inner side of my foreskin that have been present for about two years.
There seems to be a slight spreading phenomenon, but there are no other symptoms.
Could this be related to a lack of cleaning or an infection? I also had phimosis as a child.
Could you please explain the possible conditions?
Mr. Wu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/20
Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
It sounds like there may not be any issues.
However, if you have concerns, it is advisable to see a urologist for an examination.

Pearly penile papules (PPP) are small, dome-shaped, and typically painless bumps that appear around the corona of the glans penis. They are a common anatomical variant and are considered a normal finding rather than a disease. PPP is often mistaken for other conditions, such as genital warts or folliculitis, but they are distinct in their characteristics and implications.
The exact cause of pearly penile papules is not fully understood, but they are thought to be related to the normal anatomy of the penis. They are most commonly found in young adult males and are not associated with any sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other medical conditions. The presence of PPP does not indicate poor hygiene or an infection; rather, they are simply a variation in skin anatomy.
In your case, the fact that these bumps have been present for two years without any associated symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge is reassuring. The slight increase in their number or spread is also common, as the appearance of PPP can change over time. It is important to note that PPP does not require treatment unless the individual desires removal for cosmetic reasons.
Regarding your concern about a history of phimosis (tight foreskin), it is unlikely that this condition is directly related to the development of pearly penile papules. Phimosis can lead to other issues, such as infections or inflammation, but it does not cause PPP. Maintaining good hygiene is essential, especially if you have a history of phimosis, as it can help prevent infections and other complications.
If you are still concerned about the appearance of these bumps or if you notice any changes, such as increased size, color changes, or the development of new symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. A dermatologist or urologist can provide a thorough examination and confirm the diagnosis. They can also discuss potential treatment options if you wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.
In summary, pearly penile papules are a benign condition that does not pose any health risks. They are a normal anatomical variant and are not related to infections or hygiene practices. If you have any further concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
