Lower left abdomen
Could you please tell me if my lower left abdomen hurts when my stomach is relaxed and when I walk, but it doesn't hurt too much? I don't feel pain when sitting down during exertion.
The discomfort started yesterday after exercising a couple of days ago.
Could it possibly be a muscle strain or something similar?

Dear Anonymous Mr.:
1.
You experienced pain in the lower left abdomen after exercising the day before yesterday, and the pain worsens with abdominal relaxation and walking.
There are many potential causes to consider, including urinary tract stones, urinary tract infections, myofascial inflammation, bowel obstruction, hernias, shingles, and even colitis or colorectal cancer.
However, given your situation, it is likely that the pain is due to a muscle strain leading to myofascial pain syndrome.
2.
I recommend that if the pain persists and does not improve, you should discuss it with your primary care physician or seek follow-up at a surgical outpatient clinic.

More Info
Lower left abdominal pain can be a complex issue with various potential causes, and it is essential to understand the context of your symptoms to determine the appropriate course of action. Given your description of the pain occurring during relaxation and walking, but not while sitting, it may suggest a musculoskeletal issue, such as a muscle strain or ligament strain, particularly if you have recently engaged in physical activity.
Muscle strains can occur when the muscles are overstretched or torn, often due to sudden movements or excessive exertion. If you have recently exercised or performed activities that required bending or twisting, this could lead to discomfort in the abdominal area. Additionally, the abdominal muscles play a significant role in stabilizing the core during movement, and any strain can manifest as localized pain.
However, it is crucial to consider other potential causes of left lower abdominal pain. Some common conditions include:
1. Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions like diverticulitis (inflammation of diverticula in the colon), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or constipation can lead to localized pain. Given your history of diverticulosis, it would be wise to monitor for any changes in bowel habits or the presence of fever, which could indicate diverticulitis.
2. Urological Concerns: Issues related to the urinary tract, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or kidney stones, can also cause pain in the lower abdomen. Symptoms may include changes in urination, such as increased frequency or burning sensations.
3. Gynecological Factors: In females, conditions such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can cause left-sided abdominal pain. If you experience any menstrual irregularities or additional symptoms like nausea, it may warrant further evaluation.
4. Musculoskeletal Pain: As mentioned earlier, muscle strains or ligament injuries can cause pain during movement. If the pain is sharp and localized, it may be related to a specific muscle group or ligament in the abdominal area.
When to Seek Help:
- If the pain persists for more than a few days without improvement.
- If you experience severe pain that disrupts your daily activities.
- If you notice any accompanying symptoms such as fever, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, or blood in urine or stool.
- If the pain worsens or changes in character, such as becoming more intense or spreading to other areas.
In conclusion, while it is possible that your symptoms are related to a muscle strain, it is essential to remain vigilant for other potential causes. If the pain continues or worsens, I recommend consulting with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly order imaging studies or laboratory tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and help alleviate your discomfort.
