Medication abortion issues for 2 weeks?
I took the second dose of the medication for abortion on March 10.
Around March 18, the bleeding decreased significantly, even to just a few drops, and the color became lighter (light brown).
However, on March 22, the blood color became darker again, and the amount of bleeding increased compared to the previous days.
Is this normal, or does it indicate that the process is not complete?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the patient must return for a follow-up appointment one to two weeks after taking the abortion medication.
Clinical examination, β-HCG testing, and ultrasound scanning are necessary to confirm whether the embryo has been completely expelled.
Based on your description, it is recommended to have the prescribing physician arrange for the relevant tests to determine if everything is normal.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When it comes to medication-induced abortion, it’s essential to understand that experiences can vary significantly from person to person. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing fluctuations in bleeding after taking the second dose of medication on March 10. It’s not uncommon for individuals to have varying amounts of bleeding and changes in blood color during this process.
Typically, after taking medication for abortion, one can expect to experience bleeding that may resemble a heavy menstrual period. This bleeding can start off heavy and then taper off, or it may fluctuate, as you have described. The color of the blood can also change, ranging from bright red to dark brown, which is often just old blood being expelled from the uterus.
The fact that you experienced a decrease in blood flow followed by an increase again could indicate that your body is still in the process of expelling the contents of the uterus. It’s important to note that some women may experience intermittent bleeding for a couple of weeks after the procedure. However, if you notice any of the following symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical attention:
1. Severe Pain: While some cramping is expected, severe or worsening pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medication may indicate complications.
2. Heavy Bleeding: If you soak through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours, this could be a sign of excessive bleeding.
3. Fever or Chills: These symptoms could indicate an infection, which requires immediate medical evaluation.
4. Foul-Smelling Discharge: This could also be a sign of infection.
5. Persistent Symptoms: If you continue to have bleeding or other symptoms beyond what you were advised by your healthcare provider, it’s essential to follow up.
In your case, since you mentioned that the healthcare provider indicated that every individual’s experience is different and that you should monitor your bleeding for two weeks, it seems they are following standard protocols. However, if your bleeding pattern continues to be irregular or if you have any concerns about whether the abortion was complete, it is advisable to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend an ultrasound to ensure that there are no retained products of conception, which can sometimes happen.
In summary, while some fluctuation in bleeding is normal after a medication abortion, it’s essential to listen to your body and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. Your health and well-being are paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your reproductive health.
