Pressing on the nostrils causes pain?
Doctor, I have a habit of picking my nose every night before bed.
A few days ago, while picking, I felt a rough area near my nostril that seems to be scabbed over.
When I press on that area from the outside of my nose, it hurts (it's on the right side of my nose).
Should I seek medical attention for this?

Hello: If there is no obvious redness, swelling, heat, or pain, it may be a mild infection that can be monitored.
However, if there is significant pain, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to experiencing painful nasal pressure, especially after a recent incident of nasal manipulation, it’s important to consider several factors before deciding whether to seek medical attention from an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist.
Firstly, the sensation of roughness or crusting near the nostril, along with localized pain when pressure is applied, could indicate a few potential issues. One possibility is that you may have caused minor trauma to the nasal mucosa during your habitual nose-picking. This can lead to irritation, inflammation, or even the formation of a small scab as the tissue heals. In many cases, such minor injuries can resolve on their own without the need for medical intervention.
However, there are other considerations to keep in mind. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you notice additional symptoms such as increased swelling, redness, or discharge (especially if it is yellow or green, which could indicate an infection), it would be prudent to consult an ENT specialist. Persistent pain or the presence of discharge could suggest a secondary infection, such as rhinitis or sinusitis, which may require medical treatment.
Moreover, if you experience systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, or significant facial swelling, these could be signs of a more serious condition, such as a sinus infection or even an abscess. In such cases, prompt medical evaluation is essential to prevent complications.
It’s also worth noting that habitual nose-picking can lead to other complications over time, such as nasal septum perforation or chronic nasal irritation. If this is a recurring habit, it might be beneficial to explore strategies to reduce or eliminate it, as this could help prevent future issues.
In summary, while your current symptoms may not necessitate immediate medical attention, it is important to monitor your condition closely. If you experience worsening symptoms, signs of infection, or if the pain does not resolve within a few days, seeking an evaluation from an ENT specialist would be advisable. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including nasal endoscopy, to assess the extent of any injury or underlying condition and recommend appropriate treatment.
In the meantime, consider practicing good nasal hygiene, such as using saline nasal sprays to keep the nasal passages moist, and avoid further manipulation of the area to allow for healing. If you have any concerns or questions about your symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
