Head mass
Recently, I discovered a hard lump in the lower left area of my occipital region.
It moves slightly, and the surface of my scalp appears normal.
It feels semi-circular to the touch and is painful.
It measures approximately one centimeter in length and width.
What could this be??? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery
Hello! It is most likely a sebaceous cyst.
Surgical excision is recommended, as incision and drainage or solely antibiotic treatment may lead to recurrence.
However, it is still advisable to visit a general surgery outpatient clinic for a physician's evaluation.

More Info
When you discover a hard bump on the back of your head, particularly in the area you described (the left lower occipital region), it can understandably cause concern. There are several potential causes for such a bump, and understanding these can help you determine whether you need to seek medical attention.
1. Lipoma: One of the most common benign growths that can occur under the skin is a lipoma. These are soft, fatty lumps that can feel firm and can move slightly when you touch them. They are generally painless and do not require treatment unless they become bothersome.
2. Cyst: Another possibility is a sebaceous cyst, which is a small, non-cancerous bump beneath the skin. These cysts can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and discomfort. They typically feel smooth and can be moved slightly under the skin.
3. Bone Spur: Sometimes, a hard bump can be a bone spur or an abnormal growth of bone. This can occur due to various reasons, including previous trauma or repetitive stress. Bone spurs can be painful, especially if they press on nearby nerves or tissues.
4. Trauma: If you have a history of trauma to the head, such as a fall or a hit, the bump could be a result of that injury. It might represent a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) or a contusion (a bruise). These can be painful and may take time to resolve.
5. Infection: Infections can also lead to swelling and bumps. If there is any redness, warmth, or drainage from the area, it could indicate an infection that requires medical evaluation.
6. Lymph Node: Sometimes, swollen lymph nodes can present as bumps on the scalp. This can occur due to infections or other inflammatory processes in the body.
Given that you mentioned the bump is painful and measures about one centimeter, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan to better understand the nature of the bump.
In summary, while many bumps on the head are benign and not a cause for alarm, the presence of pain and the specific characteristics of the bump warrant further investigation. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body, especially in sensitive areas like the head. Seeking a professional opinion will provide you with peace of mind and appropriate management if needed.
