Could I be pregnant?

On March 12, my boyfriend penetrated and broke my hymen, then immediately withdrew.
My last menstrual period started on the 23rd of last month, and this month it is now March 26, and I still haven't gotten my period.
I've been experiencing abdominal pain these past few days.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/26

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even if ejaculation has not occurred, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, especially after unprotected intercourse, it is essential to understand the timing of ovulation, the menstrual cycle, and the early signs of pregnancy. Based on your description, you had intercourse on March 12, and your last menstrual period (LMP) was on February 23. If your menstrual cycle is typically around 28 days, you would have likely ovulated around March 9, which means that intercourse just a few days before ovulation could lead to pregnancy.

Given that your period is now late (as of March 26), there is a possibility of pregnancy. The symptoms you are experiencing, such as abdominal pain, could be related to various factors, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or early pregnancy. It is important to note that some women experience cramping or discomfort in the early stages of pregnancy, which can be similar to menstrual cramps.

To assess the likelihood of pregnancy, consider the following:
1. Timing of Intercourse: If you had unprotected intercourse close to your ovulation date, the chances of conception are higher. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulated shortly after intercourse, fertilization could have occurred.

2. Menstrual Cycle Regularity: If your cycles are typically regular and you have missed your period, this is a significant indicator that you may be pregnant. Irregular cycles can complicate this assessment, but a missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy.

3. Early Pregnancy Symptoms: Common early signs of pregnancy include:
- Missed period
- Breast tenderness or swelling
- Nausea or vomiting (morning sickness)
- Increased urination
- Fatigue
- Mood swings
- Cramping or light spotting (implantation bleeding)
4. Pregnancy Testing: The most reliable way to confirm pregnancy is through a home pregnancy test, which detects the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine. It is recommended to take the test after your missed period for the most accurate result. If you test too early, the hormone levels may not be high enough to detect.

5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you continue to experience symptoms or if your period does not arrive, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than a urine test and can provide results earlier.

In summary, based on the timing of your menstrual cycle and the unprotected intercourse, there is a possibility that you could be pregnant. The abdominal pain you are experiencing could be related to either pregnancy or the onset of your period. To clarify your situation, I recommend taking a home pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. If you are pregnant, early prenatal care is essential for your health and the health of your baby.
