The sensation of a foreign body in the throat?

Hello Doctor: For the past two months, I have been feeling a sensation of a foreign body in my throat.
When I wake up, I often feel like I want to vomit, but I can't bring anything up, which results in a lack of appetite in the morning.
Sometimes, when I eat, I experience a sore throat, and after swallowing, I feel like there is something in my chest, but it resolves quickly.
I do not have difficulty swallowing.
Additionally, I have been coughing up white phlegm.
I have not yet gone to the hospital for an examination.
Should I go to a major hospital for a check-up? What could these symptoms indicate?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: The most common condition is chronic pharyngitis, which is related to gastroesophageal reflux, smoking, and postnasal drip.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to consult an otolaryngologist or a gastroenterologist for further examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

The sensation of having a foreign object in the throat, often described as a feeling of something stuck or an urge to clear the throat, can be quite distressing. This symptom can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help you determine when to seek medical attention.

Common Causes
1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): One of the most common causes of a sensation of a lump in the throat is GERD, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to irritation and inflammation. This can cause symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and the feeling of a lump in the throat.

2. Allergies: Allergies can lead to post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, causing irritation and the sensation of something being stuck.

3. Infections: Throat infections, such as pharyngitis or tonsillitis, can cause swelling and discomfort, leading to a feeling of a foreign object in the throat.

4. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can also play a role. Anxiety can manifest physically, and many people experience a sensation of tightness or a lump in the throat when they are stressed or anxious.

5. Throat Conditions: Conditions such as esophageal spasms, strictures, or even tumors can cause similar sensations. While these are less common, they are important to consider, especially if symptoms persist.

Symptoms to Monitor
While the sensation of a foreign object in the throat can be benign, certain accompanying symptoms warrant immediate medical attention:
- Difficulty swallowing: If you experience significant difficulty swallowing food or liquids, this could indicate a more serious condition.

- Persistent pain: If the pain in your throat or chest persists or worsens, it’s important to seek medical advice.

- Weight loss: Unintentional weight loss can be a sign of an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

- Changes in voice: Hoarseness or changes in your voice that last more than a couple of weeks should be evaluated.

- Breathing difficulties: If you experience shortness of breath or wheezing, seek emergency care.

When to Seek Help
Given that you have been experiencing this sensation for two months, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A visit to an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist would be beneficial, as they can perform a thorough examination of your throat and esophagus. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as:
- Laryngoscopy: A procedure that allows the doctor to look at your throat and vocal cords using a small camera.

- Endoscopy: This may be suggested to examine the esophagus and stomach if GERD or other gastrointestinal issues are suspected.

- Allergy testing: If allergies are suspected, testing can help identify specific triggers.

Conclusion
While the sensation of a foreign object in the throat can be caused by various factors, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any of the concerning symptoms mentioned above, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Early diagnosis and treatment can help alleviate discomfort and address any underlying conditions effectively. Remember, your health is paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to persistent symptoms.
