How many days does it take to rule out the possibility of pregnancy?
Hello, doctor.
My menstrual cycle has been irregular for the past few months, and although I have taken precautions during sexual intercourse, I still worry about the possibility of pregnancy since I currently do not plan to conceive.
I previously visited a gynecologist who mentioned that my endometrium is too thin and prescribed me two medications (one called Hexagonal Red and another that is a white round pill for incomplete uterine contractions).
After taking the medication, I experienced some bleeding, and a week later, I started having a significant amount of vaginal discharge, which has continued until now.
Last month, my period started on February 27 and lasted for 10 days, with only a small amount of dark brown discharge.
A few days ago, I had a blood test for pregnancy (13 days after intercourse), and the result showed HCG < 1.2.
Does this mean that the possibility of pregnancy can be ruled out? Additionally, I would like to know if using an over-the-counter pregnancy test a few days after intercourse can also rule out the possibility of pregnancy.
I apologize for the lengthy message and appreciate your help, doctor.

Hello, a pregnancy test should be taken at least 12 days after conception to yield accurate results.
If it’s taken earlier, it may not indicate pregnancy.
It's advisable to use preventive measures beforehand.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to ruling out pregnancy after unprotected sex, timing and the method of testing are crucial factors. If you have had unprotected intercourse and are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it is important to understand how soon you can accurately test for it.
Typically, a home pregnancy test (HPT) can detect pregnancy about one week after a missed period, which is usually around 14 days after ovulation. This is because it takes time for the fertilized egg to implant in the uterus and for the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to build up to detectable levels in your urine. If you test too early, you may receive a false negative result, meaning the test indicates you are not pregnant when you actually are.
In your case, since you mentioned that you had a blood test for hCG 13 days after the sexual encounter, and the result was less than 1.2, this strongly suggests that you are not pregnant. Blood tests are generally more sensitive than urine tests and can detect lower levels of hCG. A result of hCG <1.2 is typically considered negative for pregnancy.
Regarding the use of home pregnancy tests, it is advisable to wait at least 14 days after unprotected sex for the most reliable result. Testing too early can lead to inaccurate results due to insufficient hCG levels. If you test at this time and receive a negative result, it is generally safe to conclude that you are not pregnant.
Additionally, you mentioned experiencing irregular menstrual cycles and having a thin endometrial lining, which can complicate your menstrual health. Irregular periods can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, weight changes, or underlying health conditions. It is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider regarding these issues, especially if you are experiencing significant changes in your menstrual cycle or unusual symptoms.
If you continue to have concerns about your menstrual health or the possibility of pregnancy, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can offer guidance tailored to your specific situation, including potential treatments for irregular periods or further testing if necessary.
In summary, based on your blood test results and the timing of your testing, it appears that you can rule out pregnancy at this point. However, if you have any lingering doubts or if your menstrual irregularities persist, seeking further medical advice would be beneficial. Regular check-ups with your gynecologist can help monitor your reproductive health and address any concerns you may have.
