Post-nasal drip and nasal congestion?
Hello Doctor: Recently, I often experience post-nasal drip while sleeping, along with nasal congestion.
I also frequently feel pain in the forehead area above my left eye.
Could this be a symptom of sinusitis? I had surgery for chronic sinusitis and polyp removal on July 14, 2015, and it has been 8 months since the surgery.
Is it possible for it to recur in such a short time? I also had nasal polyp removal surgery in 2007, and I currently do not have any cold symptoms...

Hello! The symptoms still resemble sinusitis.
It is recommended to follow up with the original surgical hospital for further examination.
Wishing you health and happiness! Sincerely, Dr.

Post-nasal drip and nasal congestion are common symptoms that can arise from various underlying conditions, including sinusitis, allergies, and structural abnormalities in the nasal passages. Given your history of chronic sinusitis and previous surgeries for nasal polyps, it is understandable to be concerned about the recurrence of these issues.
Post-nasal drip occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the throat, often leading to a sensation of mucus dripping down the throat. This can be caused by several factors, including allergies, infections, or irritants in the environment. Nasal congestion, on the other hand, is the blockage of nasal passages due to swollen tissues and blood vessels, often resulting from inflammation caused by infections or allergies.
Your symptoms of experiencing post-nasal drip while sleeping, along with nasal congestion and forehead pain, could indeed suggest a recurrence of sinusitis. Sinusitis can occur even after surgical intervention, especially if there are ongoing factors contributing to inflammation, such as allergies or environmental irritants. The pain you feel in the forehead area, particularly above the left eye, may indicate involvement of the frontal sinuses, which are located just above the eyes.
It is also important to consider that nasal polyps can recur after surgical removal, particularly in individuals with a history of asthma or allergies. The presence of polyps can lead to chronic inflammation and blockage of the sinuses, which can exacerbate symptoms of sinusitis and post-nasal drip.
Given that you had surgery for chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps only eight months ago, it is possible that you are experiencing a recurrence of these conditions. However, it is also essential to rule out other potential causes, such as allergies or irritants, which may be contributing to your symptoms.
Here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms:
1. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or performing nasal irrigation with a neti pot can help clear mucus and allergens from your nasal passages, providing relief from congestion and post-nasal drip.
2. Allergy Management: If you suspect allergies may be contributing to your symptoms, consider consulting an allergist for testing and management strategies. Antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be beneficial.
3. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus, making it easier to drain and reducing the sensation of post-nasal drip.
4. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from a hot shower or a bowl of hot water can help soothe inflamed nasal passages and promote drainage.
5. Consultation with an ENT Specialist: Given your surgical history and current symptoms, it would be prudent to follow up with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies, to assess the status of your sinuses and determine if there is any recurrence of polyps or other complications.
In summary, while your symptoms may indicate a recurrence of sinusitis or nasal polyps, it is essential to have a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent further complications and improve your quality of life.
