Hit on the temple by a classmate?

Yesterday during physical education class, while sitting on the ground waiting for the exam, a classmate accidentally hit my temple with their knee while trying to save the ball.
It still hurts when I touch it, and I feel very fatigued easily.
Sometimes I also feel dizzy, and my memory has become worse.
Will this improve?

Annie, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/29

Experiencing a head injury, especially from a direct impact like a knee to the temple, can lead to various symptoms, including pain, fatigue, dizziness, and cognitive changes such as memory issues. These symptoms can be concerning, and it’s important to understand both the potential implications of your injury and the steps you can take for recovery.

Firstly, the symptoms you describe—pain at the site of impact, fatigue, dizziness, and memory problems—are not uncommon after a head injury. The temple area is particularly sensitive due to the proximity of the brain and the presence of major blood vessels. A blow to this area can lead to a concussion, which is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Concussions can cause a range of symptoms, including headaches, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and memory issues.
In terms of recovery, many individuals experience improvement over time, especially with appropriate care. Here are some steps you can take to aid your recovery:
1. Rest: This is crucial after a head injury. Your brain needs time to heal, so ensure you get plenty of sleep and avoid strenuous activities, both physically and mentally. This includes limiting screen time and avoiding activities that require intense concentration.

2. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your recovery. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins can be beneficial for brain health.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If you notice worsening headaches, increased confusion, persistent dizziness, or any new symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention.
4. Gradual Return to Activities: Once your symptoms begin to improve, you can gradually return to your normal activities. However, this should be done cautiously. If you experience a recurrence of symptoms, it’s advisable to stop and rest.

5. Follow-Up Care: It’s wise to consult a healthcare professional, such as a neurologist or a primary care physician, especially if your symptoms persist or worsen. They may recommend imaging studies like a CT scan or MRI to rule out more serious injuries, such as bleeding in the brain.

6. Cognitive Rest: In addition to physical rest, cognitive rest is also important. This means taking breaks from activities that require significant mental effort, such as studying, reading, or playing video games.

7. Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: These substances can interfere with your recovery and exacerbate symptoms.

8. Physical Therapy: If you experience persistent dizziness or balance issues, a physical therapist can help with exercises to improve your stability and coordination.

In conclusion, while many people recover from mild head injuries like concussions with time and care, it’s essential to pay attention to your body and seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen. Remember, your health is the priority, and taking the right steps now can help ensure a full recovery.
