Is there a relationship between a deviated septum and post-nasal drip?
I often experience post-nasal drip, and after a CT scan, the doctor diagnosed me with a deviated septum.
Although I have sinusitis, the doctor mentioned that surgery for sinusitis is not yet necessary and instead recommended surgery for the deviated septum.
However, I am unsure if correcting the deviated septum will improve my post-nasal drip symptoms (I frequently cough up white phlegm, especially in the morning upon waking).

Dr. Chen Junliang reply Otolaryngology
Sam: Post-nasal drip is not significantly related to a deviated septum, as the primary symptom of a deviated septum is nasal obstruction.
Therefore, the improvement after surgery is likely to be minimal.
It is possible that allergic rhinitis or sinusitis is causing increased mucus production, leading to post-nasal drip.

Septal deviation surgery, also known as septoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated nasal septum, which is the cartilage and bone structure that divides the nasal cavity into two nostrils. A deviated septum can lead to various nasal issues, including nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, and chronic sinus problems. One common symptom associated with a deviated septum is post-nasal drip, which occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the throat, leading to discomfort and coughing, especially in the morning.
In your case, since you have been diagnosed with a deviated septum and are experiencing post-nasal drip, undergoing septoplasty may indeed help alleviate your symptoms. By straightening the septum, the surgery can improve airflow through the nasal passages, potentially reducing the amount of mucus produced and allowing for better drainage. This can lead to a decrease in post-nasal drip, especially if your symptoms are primarily due to the obstruction caused by the deviation.
However, it is important to note that while septoplasty can significantly improve nasal airflow and reduce symptoms associated with nasal obstruction, it may not completely resolve all issues related to post-nasal drip. Other factors, such as allergies, environmental irritants, or underlying sinus conditions, can also contribute to mucus production and drainage issues. Therefore, it is essential to have a comprehensive evaluation by your ENT specialist to determine if additional treatments or interventions may be necessary alongside the surgery.
Regarding your specific symptoms of white phlegm, particularly in the morning, this could be related to mucus accumulation overnight due to the obstructed airflow. After septoplasty, many patients report improved breathing and a reduction in mucus production, which can lead to less phlegm in the throat upon waking. However, the recovery process can vary from person to person, and it may take some time for your nasal passages to fully heal and for you to notice significant improvements.
In terms of recovery, most patients can expect some swelling and discomfort following the surgery, but these symptoms typically subside within a few weeks. Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative care instructions, which may include avoiding strenuous activities, using saline nasal sprays, and keeping your head elevated to promote healing. It is crucial to follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results.
In conclusion, septoplasty has the potential to improve your post-nasal drip symptoms by correcting the underlying issue of a deviated septum. However, it is essential to have a thorough discussion with your ENT specialist about your specific symptoms, potential outcomes, and any other contributing factors that may need to be addressed. With proper evaluation and treatment, you can work towards finding relief from your post-nasal drip and improving your overall nasal health.
