Treatment and Prevention of Plantar Warts
Hello, Doctor.
I visited a nearby dermatology clinic yesterday, and I was diagnosed with two plantar warts.
I received cryotherapy and need to return for a follow-up next week.
Should I wear socks at all times, including while sleeping, to prevent spreading the infection? Additionally, should I wash the worn socks separately from my other clothing? After the warts heal, do I need to discard my shoes and socks and get new ones?

Hello, based on your description, it is necessary to first consult with the examining physician to determine the type of wart.
Soft warts do not require treatment, while genital warts necessitate precautions to prevent intimate transmission.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
Plantar warts, also known as verrucae plantaris, are benign growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that typically develop on the soles of the feet. They can be painful and may spread to other areas of the foot or to other individuals. Effective treatment and prevention strategies are essential for managing plantar warts and minimizing the risk of recurrence or transmission.
Treatment Options
1. Cryotherapy: This is the method you mentioned, where liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the wart. This treatment is effective and often requires multiple sessions. The freezing process destroys the wart tissue and stimulates the immune system to attack the virus.
2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter treatments containing salicylic acid can help remove warts by peeling away the infected skin. These treatments are usually applied daily and may take several weeks to be effective.
3. Laser Therapy: In cases where warts are resistant to other treatments, laser therapy can be used to destroy the wart tissue.
4. Surgical Removal: For persistent warts, a healthcare provider may recommend surgical excision.
5. Immunotherapy: This involves stimulating the immune system to fight the wart virus. This can be done through topical agents like imiquimod, which enhances the immune response.
Prevention Strategies
1. Avoid Direct Contact: Since plantar warts are contagious, avoid direct contact with warts, including your own. Do not pick at warts, as this can spread the virus to other areas of your body.
2. Footwear: Wear sandals or flip-flops in communal areas such as swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.
3. Socks and Shoes: It is advisable to wear socks, especially at night, to prevent scratching or touching the warts while sleeping. This can help minimize the risk of spreading the virus to other areas of your foot or to other individuals.
4. Laundry Practices: It is a good idea to wash socks and any clothing that may have come into contact with the warts separately from other laundry. This helps to prevent the potential spread of the virus.
5. Foot Hygiene: Keep your feet clean and dry. Moist environments can promote the growth of warts. Regularly inspect your feet for any changes or new growths.
6. New Footwear: After successful treatment and once the warts have healed, consider replacing shoes and socks that may have been contaminated. This is particularly important if the warts were persistent or recurrent.
Post-Treatment Care
After the treatment of plantar warts, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that the warts have been effectively treated. If you notice any recurrence or new growths, seek medical advice promptly.
In summary, while plantar warts can be effectively treated through various methods, prevention is equally important. By maintaining good foot hygiene, avoiding direct contact with warts, and taking precautions with footwear and laundry, you can significantly reduce the risk of transmission and recurrence. If you have further concerns or questions about your treatment plan, do not hesitate to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
