Vaginal odor

Hello doctor, in recent months, I have noticed that the odor of my discharge is particularly strong around my menstrual period.
Even while sitting at work, I can smell a distinct foul odor.
However, when I went for an examination, the doctor told me that it was a normal protein smell and prescribed some suppositories, saying there was nothing to worry about.
But I am really troubled by this.
My discharge is quite abundant, and the smell resembles that of foot odor and fishy odor.
Even after taking a shower and having intercourse with my boyfriend, we both find it very unpleasant.
Is this really just a normal protein smell? Occasionally, my discharge has a slight reddish tint and sometimes contains soft white clumps.
Most of the time, it is colorless, but it can flow out in amounts similar to menstrual bleeding.

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

If vaginal discharge has a noticeable fishy odor, it is likely bacterial vaginosis.
It is recommended to increase the intake of probiotics and reduce the consumption of sweets.
If symptoms persist, it is advisable to seek medical treatment.

When it comes to vaginal odor, especially if it has changed recently and is accompanied by other symptoms, it is essential to pay attention to what your body is telling you. The presence of a strong, unpleasant odor, particularly one that resembles a fishy smell or is similar to foot odor, can indicate an underlying issue that may require medical attention.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that normal vaginal discharge can have a mild odor, but it should not be overpowering or offensive. The odor you describe, especially if it is noticeable even after bathing, suggests that there may be an imbalance in the vaginal flora or an infection. Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) or a yeast infection can lead to changes in odor and discharge. Bacterial vaginosis, in particular, is known for its characteristic fishy smell and is often accompanied by a thin, grayish discharge.
The presence of blood in your discharge, even if it is light, along with the occurrence of white, soft clumps, raises additional concerns. While some variations in discharge can be normal, especially around your menstrual cycle, the combination of these symptoms could indicate an infection or other gynecological issues that should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Regarding your previous visit to the doctor, it is not uncommon for healthcare providers to describe certain odors as normal, particularly if they do not observe any signs of infection during an examination. However, if you continue to experience discomfort or if the odor is bothersome, it is crucial to seek a second opinion or return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In terms of treatment, if an infection is diagnosed, antibiotics or antifungal medications may be prescribed depending on the specific condition. Additionally, maintaining good hygiene practices, such as wearing breathable cotton underwear, avoiding douches or scented products, and ensuring proper cleaning after intercourse, can help manage and prevent further issues.

It is also worth noting that hormonal fluctuations, particularly around your menstrual cycle, can affect the consistency and odor of vaginal discharge. If you notice that the odor intensifies around your period, it may be related to hormonal changes or the natural process of menstruation.

In summary, while some odor can be normal, the strong, unpleasant smell you describe, especially when combined with other symptoms like blood and unusual discharge, warrants further investigation. Do not hesitate to advocate for your health and seek additional medical advice if your concerns persist. Regular gynecological check-ups are essential for monitoring your reproductive health, especially if you experience ongoing symptoms.
