Can I get pregnant?
In March, I had multiple sexual encounters with my boyfriend, and we used condoms each time.
After each encounter, we confirmed that the condoms did not break and there was no ejaculation outside.
My period is expected on April 4th, but since March 31st, I have been experiencing cramping in my lower abdomen that feels somewhat like menstrual cramps, although not as painful.
This has been ongoing for three days (which is unusual for me).
My body temperature has also been elevated.
I'm unsure if this is due to my period approaching or if there is a possibility of pregnancy.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the failure rate of condoms as a contraceptive method is over 5%, making it less reliable compared to other methods.
Additionally, early pregnancy may not present specific symptoms, and subjective symptoms cannot be used to make a determination.
It is recommended to take a pregnancy test if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, it's essential to understand the symptoms and timing associated with conception. Based on your description, you have engaged in protected intercourse multiple times in March, and you have been vigilant about checking for any breakage of the condom or leakage of semen. This is a responsible approach, as condoms are generally effective in preventing pregnancy when used correctly.
Your expected menstrual period is on April 4th, and you have begun experiencing lower abdominal discomfort that resembles menstrual cramps but is not as intense. This discomfort has persisted for three days, which is unusual for you. Additionally, you mentioned an increase in your body temperature, which could be a sign of various factors, including hormonal changes related to your menstrual cycle or potential early pregnancy.
It is important to note that many women experience premenstrual symptoms, which can include cramping, bloating, and changes in body temperature. These symptoms can sometimes mimic early pregnancy signs, making it challenging to distinguish between the two without further evaluation.
In terms of timing, if you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window (which typically occurs around ovulation, about 14 days before your expected period), there is a possibility of pregnancy. However, since you used condoms consistently, the likelihood of pregnancy is reduced.
If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, the best course of action is to wait until after your expected period to take a home pregnancy test. Most home pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Testing too early may result in a false negative, as hCG levels may not be high enough to detect before your missed period.
If your period does not arrive on time, or if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test to confirm pregnancy and provide guidance based on your specific situation. Additionally, if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, seeking medical attention promptly is crucial.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing could be indicative of either an impending menstrual cycle or early pregnancy, the use of condoms significantly lowers the risk of pregnancy. Monitoring your symptoms and taking a pregnancy test after your missed period will provide clarity. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and support.
