White spots..?

Hello doctor, I recently noticed that my brother has developed a row of small white bumps along the glans sulcus.
They are not painful or itchy.
Is this a normal phenomenon? How can we make the white bumps disappear? Should we see a urologist? Thank you for your response!

Response to the physician: Subject of concern from Dr.
Chen Chih-Hong: White small spots...
This is a normal phenomenon; some individuals may develop these "pearly penile papules" on the glans, and they may appear larger during an erection.
There is no need for concern or treatment.

When it comes to the appearance of white bumps on the penis, particularly along the glans or the shaft, it is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice. Based on your description of white, painless, and non-itchy bumps, there are several possibilities to consider.

One common cause of white bumps on the penis is pearly penile papules, which are small, benign growths that typically appear around the corona of the glans. These are completely normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment unless they cause psychological distress. They are not associated with any disease and are not contagious.

Another possibility is the presence of Fordyce spots, which are small, painless, pale bumps that are actually sebaceous glands that are visible due to their location. Like pearly penile papules, Fordyce spots are harmless and do not require any treatment.

However, if the white bumps are new, changing in appearance, or accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge, it may indicate a more serious condition, such as a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or a skin condition like lichen planus or psoriasis. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a urologist or a dermatologist for a proper evaluation.

If you are concerned about the appearance of these bumps, especially since they are new and you are unsure of their nature, it is wise to schedule an appointment with a urologist. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination, take a detailed medical history, and possibly conduct tests to rule out any underlying conditions.

In terms of treatment, if the bumps are determined to be benign and not causing any issues, no treatment may be necessary. If they are due to a condition that requires intervention, the urologist will discuss the appropriate treatment options with you.

In summary, while many white bumps on the penis can be normal anatomical variations, it is crucial to monitor any changes in their appearance or associated symptoms. If you have any doubts or concerns, especially if the bumps are new or changing, seeking medical advice from a urologist is the best course of action. They can provide reassurance, diagnosis, and treatment options if necessary. Remember, your sexual health is important, and addressing concerns early can lead to better outcomes.
