Irregular menstruation

Hello doctor, my last menstrual period was from March 8 to March 13, but less than a week later, on March 19, I had another period that lasted until March 23.
I had already been taking menstrual regulation medication for two months prior to this.
Recently, I have noticed brown discharge when using the restroom, but it's only a small amount.
I've also been experiencing occasional abdominal discomfort, and today I found that my body temperature is higher than usual.
I would like to know what might be going on.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/05

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it could be ovulatory bleeding.
If you continue to experience discomfort, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Irregular menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding its causes is crucial for addressing any underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a series of unusual menstrual symptoms, including an early onset of menstruation, brown discharge, abdominal discomfort, and elevated body temperature. Let's break down these symptoms and explore potential causes.

Firstly, the occurrence of your period shortly after the previous one could indicate a few possibilities. One common reason for irregular menstrual cycles is hormonal imbalance. Hormonal fluctuations can be influenced by various factors, including stress, changes in weight, diet, exercise, and the use of hormonal medications such as birth control pills or other menstrual regulation drugs. Since you mentioned that you have been taking menstrual regulation medication for two months, it is possible that your body is still adjusting to these hormones, which can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting.

The presence of brown discharge is often associated with older blood that takes longer to exit the body. This can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual cycle and is generally not a cause for alarm. However, if it persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it may warrant further investigation.

Abdominal discomfort can also be linked to hormonal changes, as well as other factors such as ovulation pain or even gastrointestinal issues. Elevated body temperature, particularly if it is significantly higher than your normal range, could indicate an underlying infection or inflammation. If you are experiencing fever-like symptoms, it is essential to monitor your temperature and seek medical attention if it persists or worsens.

In addition to hormonal factors, other potential causes of irregular menstruation can include:
1. Stress: High levels of stress can disrupt the hypothalamus, which regulates hormones that control the menstrual cycle. This can lead to missed periods or irregular bleeding.

2. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): This condition is characterized by hormonal imbalances that can cause irregular periods, weight gain, and other symptoms.

3. Thyroid Disorders: Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can affect menstrual cycles, leading to irregularities.

4. Uterine Conditions: Conditions such as fibroids, polyps, or endometriosis can cause abnormal bleeding and discomfort.

5. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned that you have been taking menstrual regulation medication, it is still important to rule out pregnancy, especially if you have had unprotected intercourse.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, a pelvic ultrasound to assess the reproductive organs, and possibly a pregnancy test to rule out any complications.
In conclusion, while irregular menstruation can be concerning, understanding the potential causes can help in managing your health. It is essential to listen to your body and seek medical advice when experiencing unusual symptoms, especially if they persist or worsen. Your healthcare provider can offer personalized guidance and treatment options to help regulate your menstrual cycle and address any underlying issues.
