I have a medical condition I would like to inquire about?
I have a health issue that I would like to inquire about.
Since March, I have noticed that whenever I stand and do anything, my calves and the soles of my feet feel unsteady and weak.
If I experience sleep deprivation, I also feel nauseous and my head feels light, as if I might faint.
After seeking medical attention, no cause has been identified.
I have undergone blood tests, thyroid tests, and some brain examinations, all of which showed no abnormalities.
I have also looked into reports related to ear disorders, but I'm unsure if they are relevant.
Therefore, I would like to ask the physician if you could provide me with some assistance.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Lin Junliang.
Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/09/02
Dr. Jian Huangqi reply Otolaryngology
Hello Junliang: The sensation of your calves and feet feeling wobbly and weak when standing suggests that you should consult an orthopedic or neurologist.
If you are sleep-deprived, it is natural to experience the symptoms you mentioned; improving your sleep will likely resolve them.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Hello Lin Junliang,
I understand that you have been experiencing unexplained dizziness and weakness in your legs since March, particularly when standing. This can be a distressing experience, especially when it is accompanied by feelings of nausea and a sensation of lightheadedness. Given that you have undergone various tests, including blood tests, thyroid evaluations, and brain examinations, and found no abnormalities, it is essential to explore other potential causes and management strategies.
Dizziness and leg weakness can stem from a variety of underlying issues. Some possibilities include:
1. Vestibular Disorders: These affect your inner ear and balance. Conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) or vestibular neuritis can cause dizziness and balance issues. A thorough evaluation by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist may be beneficial.
2. Orthostatic Hypotension: This condition occurs when your blood pressure drops significantly upon standing, leading to dizziness and weakness. It can be caused by dehydration, certain medications, or autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Monitoring your blood pressure in different positions (lying down, sitting, and standing) can help determine if this is a factor.
3. Neurological Issues: While you have had brain examinations, it may be worth considering a referral to a neurologist for further evaluation. Conditions such as multiple sclerosis or peripheral neuropathy can lead to symptoms like yours.
4. Musculoskeletal Factors: Weakness in the legs could be related to muscle or joint issues. Physical therapy may help strengthen your legs and improve balance.
5. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can manifest physically, leading to symptoms like dizziness and weakness. If you have a history of anxiety or stress, discussing this with a mental health professional may provide insights and coping strategies.
6. Nutritional Deficiencies: Deficiencies in vitamins, particularly B12, can lead to neurological symptoms, including weakness and dizziness. A comprehensive nutritional assessment may be warranted.
7. Sleep Disorders: Given that you mentioned feeling worse with sleep deprivation, it might be helpful to evaluate your sleep quality. Conditions like sleep apnea can lead to daytime fatigue and dizziness.
In terms of management, here are some strategies you might consider:
- Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate dizziness and weakness.
- Gradual Position Changes: When moving from lying down to standing, do so slowly to help your body adjust.
- Physical Therapy: Engaging in a tailored physical therapy program can help improve strength, balance, and coordination.
- Vestibular Rehabilitation: If a vestibular disorder is suspected, specific exercises can help retrain your balance system.
- Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises can help manage anxiety and improve overall well-being.
It is crucial to continue working with your healthcare providers to explore these avenues. If you feel that your concerns are not being adequately addressed, seeking a second opinion from a specialist may provide additional insights.
I hope this information is helpful, and I wish you the best in finding relief from your symptoms. Please feel free to reach out if you have further questions or need additional support.
Best regards.
