Abnormal bleeding?
Hello Dr.
Chang: I have experienced some vaginal bleeding in the past two days.
Yesterday it was more significant, and today it is just a slight amount, but it is not my menstrual period, as my period just ended a week ago.
The color is dark purple.
I'm wondering if this could be due to riding a tandem bike with my boyfriend for over 20 kilometers the day before, especially since his seat is not very comfortable.
Thank you!
Xiao Ru, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/06

Hello, the factors affecting intermenstrual bleeding are numerous, including environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, diet, age, and lesions in the uterus or cervix.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist for an examination if the bleeding persists, to determine if it is due to hormonal imbalance or early pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health, Dr.
Chang.

More Info
Abnormal vaginal bleeding can be a concerning symptom for many women, and understanding its potential causes is crucial for addressing any underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems you experienced bleeding shortly after your menstrual period ended, which is not typical. The color of the blood being dark purple may also indicate that it is older blood, which can sometimes be a sign of retained blood or other factors.
There are several potential causes for abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially in the context of your recent activities. Here are some possibilities to consider:
1. Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to irregular bleeding. This can happen due to stress, changes in weight, or even changes in physical activity levels. If you have recently increased your physical activity, such as cycling for long distances, this could potentially affect your hormonal balance.
2. Physical Trauma: Engaging in activities that put pressure on the pelvic area, such as cycling, especially on an uncomfortable seat, can sometimes lead to minor trauma to the vaginal or cervical tissues. This could result in light bleeding or spotting. If the bleeding persists or is accompanied by pain, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
3. Ovulation Spotting: Some women experience spotting during ovulation, which typically occurs about midway through the menstrual cycle. This spotting can sometimes be mistaken for abnormal bleeding. However, since you mentioned that your period just ended, this may not be the case for you.
4. Infections or Inflammation: Conditions such as cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix) or vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina) can also cause abnormal bleeding. These conditions may be accompanied by other symptoms such as unusual discharge or discomfort.
5. Polyps or Fibroids: Uterine polyps or fibroids can cause irregular bleeding. These are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can lead to changes in menstrual patterns or unexpected bleeding.
6. Pregnancy-Related Issues: Although you mentioned that your period just ended, it’s important to rule out any pregnancy-related issues, including implantation bleeding or complications such as a miscarriage, especially if you are sexually active.
Given that you have experienced this bleeding after a significant physical activity, it may be related to the strain or pressure from cycling. However, if the bleeding continues, becomes heavier, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a pelvic exam and possibly imaging studies, to determine the cause of the bleeding and recommend appropriate treatment.
In summary, while occasional light bleeding can be normal, especially after physical activity, persistent or unusual bleeding should not be ignored. Keeping track of your menstrual cycle, any associated symptoms, and changes in your lifestyle can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional advice.
