Swelling of the thumb joint?
About a week ago, I felt some discomfort in the ligaments of my right thumb when gripping objects too tightly, but I didn't pay much attention to it.
During this time, I also had a sensation of accidentally straining it.
After careful observation today, I noticed a significant size difference between my left and right thumbs, especially with swelling in the joint of my right thumb (toward the right side), which appears somewhat red and purple on the surface.
I would like to know if this is due to a ligament strain or if there could be another reason, such as something growing inside.
Would it be okay to visit a general clinic for this? Thank you, doctor!

It might be an injury; take a few days to rest and see if it improves.
If it doesn't get better, then consult a physician.

More Info
Swollen thumb joints can be concerning, especially when accompanied by pain, redness, or visible swelling. Based on your description, it sounds like you may have experienced a strain or sprain in your thumb, particularly if you felt discomfort while gripping objects. However, the swelling and discoloration you are observing could indicate a more serious issue, such as a ligament injury, tendonitis, or even a fracture.
Possible Causes of Swollen Thumb Joint
1. Ligament Strain or Sprain: This occurs when the ligaments that support the thumb are overstretched or torn. Symptoms typically include pain, swelling, and limited range of motion.
2. Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the thumb joint can lead to swelling and pain, especially with repetitive use.
3. Arthritis: Conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can cause swelling in the joints, often accompanied by stiffness and pain.
4. Infection: If the swelling is accompanied by fever or increased redness, it could indicate an infection, which requires immediate medical attention.
5. Fracture: A fracture in the thumb or wrist can also lead to swelling and pain. If you have experienced a significant impact or fall, this could be a possibility.
6. Gout: This is a type of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint, leading to sudden and severe pain, swelling, and redness.
When to Seek Medical Attention
You should seek medical attention if:
- The swelling does not improve with rest and ice after a few days.
- You experience severe pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.
- There is a noticeable deformity in the thumb.
- You have difficulty moving the thumb or gripping objects.
- The swelling is accompanied by fever, chills, or other signs of infection.
- You suspect a fracture due to a recent injury.
Where to Seek Treatment
Visiting a general practitioner (GP) or an orthopedic specialist would be appropriate. They can perform a physical examination and may order imaging tests, such as X-rays, to determine the cause of the swelling. If necessary, they may refer you to a specialist for further evaluation and treatment.
Initial Self-Care Measures
While waiting for your appointment, you can take some initial self-care measures:
- Rest: Avoid using the thumb as much as possible to prevent further injury.
- Ice: Apply ice packs to the swollen area for 15-20 minutes every hour to reduce swelling.
- Compression: Use a compression bandage to help control swelling, but ensure it’s not too tight.
- Elevation: Keep your hand elevated above heart level to help reduce swelling.
Conclusion
In summary, while it is possible that your swollen thumb joint is due to a strain or overuse, the symptoms you describe warrant a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further complications and ensure a quicker recovery. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical attention promptly.
