Itchy glans and frequent urination?
Hello, doctor.
About a year ago, I started experiencing itching on the glans, initially accompanied by white discharge, frequent urination, and difficulty achieving an erection.
After taking antibiotics, there was significant improvement, but in the past few weeks, the itching on the glans, frequent urination, and difficulty with erections have returned.
What methods can help eliminate this issue? It has been troubling me for a long time.
Thank you.

Persistent itching, frequent urination, and erectile difficulties can be distressing symptoms that significantly impact one’s quality of life. Based on your description, it seems that you may be experiencing a recurrent urological issue, possibly related to an infection or inflammation of the genital area, such as balanitis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) and can cause symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, and discharge. It can be caused by various factors, including poor hygiene, irritants (like soaps or lotions), and infections (bacterial or fungal). STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can also present with similar symptoms, including discharge and discomfort.
Given that you experienced improvement with antibiotics previously, it suggests that a bacterial infection may have been involved. However, the recurrence of symptoms indicates that the underlying issue may not have been fully resolved or that there may be a new infection or irritation.
Here are some steps you can take to address your symptoms:
1. Consult a Urologist: It is crucial to see a urologist for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination, take a detailed medical history, and possibly conduct tests such as urine analysis, swabs, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
2. Antibiotic Treatment: If a bacterial infection is confirmed, a course of appropriate antibiotics may be necessary. It’s essential to complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication.
3. Hygiene Practices: Maintaining good hygiene is vital. Gently clean the genital area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps, lotions, or other irritants that may exacerbate the itching.
4. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants that may be contributing to your symptoms. This includes certain soaps, detergents, or even tight-fitting clothing that may cause friction.
5. Consider STIs: If you are sexually active, consider getting tested for STIs, as they can cause similar symptoms. Early detection and treatment are crucial for preventing complications.
6. Lifestyle Modifications: Staying hydrated and avoiding irritants such as caffeine and alcohol may help reduce urinary frequency and irritation.
7. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential to monitor your symptoms and adjust treatment as necessary. If symptoms persist despite treatment, further investigation may be warranted, including referral to a specialist.
8. Erectile Dysfunction: If you continue to experience difficulties with erections, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. Erectile dysfunction can be multifactorial, including psychological factors, hormonal imbalances, or vascular issues.
In summary, persistent itching and frequent urination warrant a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, many urological issues can be effectively managed, leading to significant improvement in symptoms and overall quality of life. Don't hesitate to seek help, as addressing these concerns early can prevent further complications and enhance your well-being.
