Nasal and ear issues?
A month ago, I experienced nasal congestion, a cough with a lot of phlegm, and a popping sound in both ears (which I can control).
After seeing a doctor, I was told that one ear canal was slightly red, and I was prescribed medication.
The doctor diagnosed me with sinusitis.
I have been taking the medication for almost four weeks, and my nasal discharge has become clear, but I still experience nasal congestion.
The cough has decreased.
I did not return for a follow-up, but for the past two weeks, I still have nasal congestion, less coughing, and more phlegm.
Most of the phlegm is clear, except for the yellow phlegm I have in the morning.
Yesterday, my throat became very itchy, my voice became hoarse, and the yellow phlegm increased.
Additionally, I still hear the popping sound in my ears (which feels like a sense of pressure).
Just now, when I pressed near my ear canal, I felt a bit of pain.
Could you please tell me if my sinusitis has not resolved yet? What could be the cause of the popping sound in my ears?

Hello: It is indeed possible that this is related to sinusitis or another cold.
The sounds in the ear may be associated with dysfunction of the Eustachian tube.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you peace and good health.

More Info
Based on your symptoms and the history you've provided, it seems that you are experiencing a complex interplay of sinusitis and ear-related issues. Let's break down your symptoms and explore the possible connections and recommendations for further evaluation.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Nasal Congestion and Sinusitis: You mentioned experiencing nasal congestion, cough, and phlegm production, which have persisted for about a month. The fact that your phlegm has changed from yellow to clear suggests some improvement, but the ongoing nasal congestion indicates that your sinusitis may not be fully resolved. Sinusitis can cause inflammation and swelling in the nasal passages, leading to difficulty in breathing through the nose, and can also contribute to post-nasal drip, which may explain your cough.
2. Ear Symptoms: The "pop" or "click" sounds in your ears, which you can control, are often associated with Eustachian tube dysfunction. The Eustachian tubes connect the middle ear to the back of the throat and help equalize pressure. When you have sinusitis, the inflammation can affect the Eustachian tubes, leading to a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ears. The redness in your ear canal noted by your doctor could indicate some inflammation, possibly linked to your sinus issues.
3. Throat Symptoms: The itchy throat and hoarseness you are experiencing, along with the increased yellow phlegm, could suggest that your sinusitis is causing post-nasal drip, irritating your throat. This can lead to inflammation and discomfort, which may also contribute to your voice changes.
Possible Diagnosis
Given your symptoms, it is likely that you are dealing with:
- Chronic Sinusitis: This condition can persist for weeks or months and may not fully resolve with initial treatment, especially if there are underlying factors such as allergies or anatomical issues.
- Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: This can occur due to sinusitis, leading to the sensation of fullness and the "pop" sounds you describe.
- Secondary Ear Issues: Inflammation from sinusitis can lead to middle ear issues, such as otitis media, especially if you are experiencing pain when pressing on the area near your ear.
Recommendations
1. Follow-Up with an ENT Specialist: Since your symptoms have persisted despite treatment, it would be wise to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including nasal endoscopy, to assess the state of your sinuses and Eustachian tubes.
2. Imaging Studies: If your symptoms continue, a CT scan of the sinuses may be warranted to evaluate for any anatomical issues or chronic sinus disease that may require more aggressive treatment.
3. Nasal Irrigation: Consider using saline nasal sprays or a neti pot to help clear mucus and reduce nasal congestion. This can also help with post-nasal drip.
4. Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected to be a contributing factor, allergy testing may provide insights and guide treatment options.
5. Medication Review: Discuss with your doctor the possibility of adjusting your current medications. Sometimes, a longer course of nasal corticosteroids or antibiotics may be necessary, especially if there is a bacterial component to your sinusitis.
6. Hydration and Humidity: Ensure you are staying well-hydrated and consider using a humidifier in your home, especially during dry seasons, to help keep your nasal passages moist.
Conclusion
Your symptoms suggest a combination of unresolved sinusitis and Eustachian tube dysfunction, which can lead to ongoing discomfort and complications. A follow-up with an ENT specialist is crucial for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Addressing both the sinus and ear issues will be key to alleviating your symptoms and improving your overall health.
