Nasal issues?

Hello, I would like to ask about an issue I experienced after traveling to Japan last week.
It seems that due to the dryness, I ended up picking my nose, which resulted in a little bleeding (only on one side).
Although it healed within a day, I have been feeling like I have more nasal crusting since then.
After returning to Taiwan, this sensation has continued (or am I just overly concerned?).
Additionally, I feel a dryness and tightness in my nose (not sure if it's due to excessive nose picking).
In the past couple of days, I've also noticed a slight odor coming from one side of my nose, but I don't have any nasal congestion or phlegm.
I'm unsure about what this condition might be and whether I need to take any special measures.
How can I care for this? Thank you.

Hello: It is advisable to apply petroleum jelly and temporarily avoid excessive cleaning of the nose, as most abrasions will naturally improve.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to seek medical attention.
Wishing you health and happiness.
Sincerely, Dr.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your nasal issues. It sounds like you've experienced some discomfort after your recent trip to Japan, particularly due to the dry air and possibly from picking your nose. Let's break down the potential causes of your symptoms, discuss what you might be experiencing, and explore some care tips.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Nasal Dryness and Crusting: After traveling to a place with dry air, it’s common to experience nasal dryness. The nasal mucosa can become dehydrated, leading to crusting or the formation of nasal "boogers." This can be exacerbated by frequent nose-picking, which can irritate the delicate lining of your nasal passages and lead to minor bleeding.

2. Nasal Bleeding: The small amount of bleeding you experienced is likely due to the trauma from picking your nose, especially if the nasal mucosa was already dry. This can create small fissures or cracks that may bleed. While this is usually not a cause for concern, it’s essential to avoid further irritation.

3. Odor from One Nostril: The presence of an unusual odor from one nostril, without other symptoms like nasal congestion or discharge, could indicate a few possibilities:
- Nasal Infection: Sometimes, a localized infection can develop, leading to foul-smelling discharge.

- Foreign Body: If something was lodged in your nose (even temporarily), it could cause irritation and odor.

- Sinus Issues: Occasionally, sinus infections can present with unusual smells, even if other symptoms are mild.

Care Tips
1. Moisturize Your Nasal Passages: To combat dryness, consider using a saline nasal spray or a saline gel. These products can help keep your nasal passages moist and reduce crusting. You can use them several times a day, especially in dry environments.

2. Avoid Nose-Picking: While it might be tempting, try to avoid picking your nose. This can lead to further irritation and potential bleeding. If you feel the need to clear your nose, gently blow it instead.

3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to help keep your mucous membranes hydrated. This can be particularly helpful if you are in a dry environment.

4. Use a Humidifier: If you are in a dry climate or during winter months when indoor heating can dry out the air, consider using a humidifier in your home. This can help maintain moisture in the air and alleviate nasal dryness.

5. Monitor for Additional Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the odor persists, or if you develop additional symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, fever, or a significant change in nasal discharge (like color or consistency), it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.

6. Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms do not improve or if you have ongoing concerns, consider seeing an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.

Conclusion
Your symptoms seem to be related to dryness and possible irritation from nose-picking, which is common after exposure to dry air. By taking steps to moisturize your nasal passages and avoiding further irritation, you should see improvement. However, if you notice any worsening of your symptoms or new symptoms arise, don't hesitate to seek medical advice. Taking care of your nasal health is essential, and a healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation. Wishing you a speedy recovery and comfort in your nasal health!
