Two unidentified foreign bodies?
Hello, I have developed foreign objects on my left earlobe (approximately 0.5 cm) and near my anal area (approximately 2.5 cm).
I found online that the earlobe could be a sebaceous cyst, but the one near my buttocks has no opening and has not discharged any white substance; it is neither painful nor itchy.
It has been small for 10 years, but this year it suddenly grew three times larger.
1.
What could this be?
2.
If I have the sebaceous cyst on my earlobe surgically removed, will it cause the earlobe to become flattened? What can I do to avoid affecting its appearance?
Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery
Hello! After the removal of the earlobe lipoma, the earlobe will not become flat; it will simply return to its original shape.
The tumor on the buttocks has suddenly increased in size by three times over the past year, and surgical removal is recommended.
Wishing you well! Changhua Hospital cares about you!

More Info
Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the mysterious growths on your left ear lobe and near your anal area. I understand that these types of issues can be quite distressing, especially when they change in size or appearance. Let’s break down your questions and provide some clarity.
1. Understanding the Growths:
- Ear Lobe Growth: Based on your description, the growth on your left ear lobe could indeed be a sebaceous cyst, commonly referred to as an epidermoid cyst or "wen." These cysts are typically benign and arise from the sebaceous glands, which produce oil for the skin. They can vary in size and may remain stable for years, but they can also increase in size due to factors like inflammation or infection. If the cyst is not causing pain or discomfort, it is often left untreated unless it becomes bothersome or infected.
- Anal Area Growth: The growth near your anal area, which has increased in size significantly over the past year, could be a variety of things, including a benign cyst, a skin tag, or even a pilonidal cyst. Given that it has no opening and is not painful, it may be a benign growth, but the rapid increase in size is concerning. It is essential to have this evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions, including potential infections or other skin lesions.
2. Surgical Considerations for the Ear Lobe Cyst:
- If you decide to have the sebaceous cyst on your ear lobe surgically removed, it is important to consult with a qualified dermatologist or surgeon. They can provide you with options that minimize the impact on your ear lobe's appearance.
- Typically, when a cyst is removed, the surgeon will make a small incision to excise the cyst completely. If done correctly, this should not lead to significant deformity. However, there is always a risk of scarring or changes in the contour of the ear lobe.
- To maintain the best cosmetic outcome, you might want to discuss techniques such as minimally invasive excision or the use of sutures that minimize scarring. Additionally, post-operative care is crucial; following your surgeon's instructions regarding wound care can help reduce the risk of complications and improve healing.
Recommendations:
- Consult a Specialist: I strongly recommend that you see a dermatologist or a general surgeon for a thorough examination of both growths. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and discuss the best treatment options tailored to your needs.
- Monitoring Changes: Keep an eye on both growths for any changes in size, color, or symptoms such as pain or discharge. If you notice any significant changes, seek medical attention promptly.
- Avoid Self-Treatment: Avoid attempting to pop or drain the cysts yourself, as this can lead to infection or worsen the condition.
In conclusion, while both growths may be benign, the change in size, especially in the anal area, warrants a professional evaluation. Surgical removal of the ear lobe cyst can be performed with careful planning to minimize cosmetic impact. Please prioritize seeing a healthcare provider to address these concerns effectively. Thank you for your questions, and I wish you the best in your health journey!
