Anal Strain and Contraction Issues: Are They Linked to Sexual Activity? - Surgery

Regarding the issues of straining and contraction during bowel movements?

I have been experiencing a lack of sensation and strength in my anus and during bowel movements lately.
I also feel that my ability to contract while defecating has diminished, and I am having difficulty with bowel movements.
Could this be related to the prolonged anal contraction during sexual activity?

Colin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/09

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

At such a young age, it is unlikely to have dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles; however, if there are abnormal sexual behaviors, it can be difficult to determine.
This is related to the coordination of the pelvic floor muscle group.
I recommend taking a break for a while, and if there is no improvement, consult a physician to check if there is indeed an issue with the contraction of the pelvic floor muscles.
If necessary, medication or biofeedback therapy may be considered.

The issues you're experiencing with anal strain and contraction, as well as the difficulties with bowel movements, can indeed be linked to your sexual activity, particularly if you have engaged in anal intercourse or have been consciously contracting the anal sphincter for extended periods.
The anal sphincter is a complex muscle that plays a crucial role in controlling bowel movements and maintaining continence. When you engage in activities that involve prolonged contraction of this muscle, such as during anal intercourse or even during certain sexual practices, it can lead to muscle fatigue or strain. This can result in a feeling of decreased strength or control over the anal area, which may explain the sensations you are experiencing.

Additionally, if you have been experiencing constipation or difficulty with bowel movements, this can further exacerbate the feeling of weakness in the anal region. Straining during bowel movements can lead to a cycle of discomfort, as it may cause the anal sphincter to become more tense or fatigued over time. This tension can make it more difficult to relax the muscles when you need to have a bowel movement, leading to a feeling of decreased strength or control.

It's also worth noting that if you have been engaging in anal play without adequate preparation or relaxation, this can lead to discomfort and potential injury to the anal muscles. The anal area is sensitive, and any trauma or excessive strain can result in inflammation or other issues that may affect your ability to contract or relax the muscles effectively.

To address these concerns, consider the following recommendations:
1. Pelvic Floor Exercises: Engaging in pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegel exercises, can help strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, including the anal sphincter. These exercises involve contracting and relaxing the muscles used to control urination and bowel movements, which can improve overall muscle tone and control.

2. Relaxation Techniques: Incorporating relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, can help reduce tension in the anal area. This can be particularly beneficial if you find yourself tensing up during sexual activity or bowel movements.

3. Dietary Adjustments: If you are experiencing constipation, consider making dietary changes to increase fiber intake and hydration. Foods rich in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can help promote regular bowel movements and reduce straining.

4. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation to rule out any underlying conditions, such as anal fissures, hemorrhoids, or other issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.

5. Avoid Prolonged Strain: If you are engaging in sexual activities that involve prolonged contraction of the anal sphincter, consider taking breaks and allowing the muscles to relax. This can help prevent fatigue and discomfort.

In summary, the sensations you are experiencing with anal strain and contraction issues may be linked to your sexual activity, particularly if there has been prolonged contraction of the anal muscles or if you are experiencing bowel movement difficulties. By implementing pelvic floor exercises, relaxation techniques, and dietary adjustments, you can work towards improving your symptoms. However, if these issues persist, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
