Serous discharge

Hello Dr.
Tsao, I am the one who asked about watery discharge two days ago.
You mentioned that if endometrial cancer is suspected, an ultrasound should be performed.
I had a transvaginal ultrasound at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital on February 3rd, before the Lunar New Year, and the examination showed no issues with my uterus, ovaries, or pelvic cavity.
Could the reason for my watery discharge be more related to inflammation? However, I had a uterine polyp about five years ago, which was treated with laparoscopy, and the pathology report confirmed it was a polyp.
Is it possible for polyps to recur? Can polyps become malignant? Recently, I have been using suppositories for the past two days, and I am more concerned about whether there could be something abnormal causing the watery discharge.
Can lack of sleep cause watery discharge? Based on your expertise, do you think the watery discharge could be serious?

Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/10

Hello, watery discharge may indicate inflammation.
If endometrial cancer is suspected, an ultrasound examination can be performed.
The likelihood of polyps becoming malignant is low.
If there are still discomforts, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Understanding watery discharge can be a complex issue, as it can arise from various causes, some benign and others that may require medical attention. Based on your description, it seems you have undergone a transvaginal ultrasound recently, which did not reveal any abnormalities in your uterus, ovaries, or pelvic cavity. This is a positive sign, as it suggests that there are no immediate concerns regarding structural issues in those areas.

Watery discharge can often be attributed to several factors, including hormonal changes, infections, or inflammation. Given your history of endometrial polyps, it is understandable to have concerns about the possibility of recurrence or malignancy. While polyps can recur, they are generally benign. However, any new or unusual symptoms, such as a change in discharge, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can also lead to increased watery discharge. These conditions may present with other symptoms, such as odor, itching, or discomfort. If you suspect an infection, it is essential to seek medical advice for appropriate testing and treatment.

Regarding your concern about whether your watery discharge could indicate a more serious condition, it is crucial to monitor for any additional symptoms. If you experience significant changes in your discharge, such as a sudden increase in volume, a change in color or odor, or accompanying symptoms like pain or fever, you should consult your healthcare provider promptly.

As for the impact of sleep deprivation on your discharge, while lack of sleep can affect your overall health and immune function, it is not directly linked to the production of watery discharge. However, stress and fatigue can influence hormonal balance, which may indirectly affect vaginal secretions.

In summary, while watery discharge can be concerning, it is often not a sign of a severe issue, especially if recent imaging studies have shown no abnormalities. However, given your medical history and the persistence of your symptoms, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as a pelvic exam or additional imaging, to rule out any underlying conditions. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns, as they can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.
