A problem with the eyes during childhood?
I have wanted to ask this for a long time.
When I was in middle school, there were one or two occasions during flag-raising ceremonies when it was very hot, and I was sweating under the strong sun.
I felt very nervous for some reason, and then my vision suddenly went completely white, and gradually returned to normal.
However, that was during middle school, and I haven't experienced anything like that since then (now I'm in college).
I really want to know what could be the issue.
Thank you.

It is possible that this phenomenon is caused by photophobia.

More Info
Temporary vision loss can be a concerning experience, and understanding its potential causes is essential for addressing any underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced a brief episode of vision loss during a stressful situation, which resolved itself over time. Here are some insights into possible causes and considerations regarding your experience.
Possible Causes of Temporary Vision Loss
1. Vasovagal Syncope: This is a common cause of temporary vision loss, particularly in situations involving stress, heat, or dehydration. When you experience a vasovagal response, your heart rate and blood pressure drop suddenly, leading to reduced blood flow to the brain and, consequently, temporary vision loss or fainting. The white-out effect you described could be attributed to this phenomenon.
2. Ocular Migraines: Some individuals experience visual disturbances, including temporary vision loss or "whiteouts," due to ocular migraines. These can occur without the typical headache associated with migraines and may be triggered by stress, bright lights, or heat. The symptoms usually resolve within a short period.
3. Heat Exhaustion or Dehydration: Being in a hot environment, especially while sweating, can lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion. These conditions can cause dizziness, fainting, and temporary vision changes. If your body is unable to regulate its temperature effectively, it can impact your overall well-being, including your vision.
4. Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar levels can also lead to temporary vision changes. If you had not eaten adequately before the event, your blood sugar might have dropped, causing symptoms such as dizziness and visual disturbances.
5. Anxiety or Panic Attacks: Stressful situations can trigger anxiety or panic attacks, which may manifest as temporary vision loss or distortions. The body's fight-or-flight response can lead to various physiological changes, including changes in vision.
Recommendations
Given that this incident occurred during your middle school years and has not recurred since, it may have been an isolated event. However, it is essential to remain vigilant about your health. Here are some recommendations:
- Stay Hydrated: Ensure you drink enough water, especially in hot weather or during stressful situations. Dehydration can exacerbate symptoms of dizziness and vision changes.
- Manage Stress: If you find yourself in stressful situations, practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or visualization to help manage anxiety.
- Regular Check-ups: If you experience any further episodes of vision loss or other concerning symptoms, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional or a healthcare provider. Regular eye exams can help monitor your eye health and catch any potential issues early.
- Monitor Triggers: Keep a journal of any episodes of vision loss, noting the circumstances surrounding them. This information can be valuable for healthcare providers in diagnosing any underlying conditions.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep to support overall health and well-being.
In conclusion, while your experience of temporary vision loss during a stressful situation may have been an isolated incident, it is essential to be aware of potential triggers and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you have any further concerns or if similar symptoms arise, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Understanding your body and its responses can empower you to manage your health effectively.
