Wound bacterial infection
Hello doctor, I previously had a wound on the inner side of my thigh that became infected with bacteria.
After treatment with antibiotics, it healed, leaving only a scar.
However, recently the scar has suddenly become painful and swollen.
What could this be?

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery
Hello! If you have redness and swelling, it is recommended to see a general surgeon for an ultrasound to check what is happening underneath.
It is quite common for a simple blood clot to not be absorbed and for a capsule to form around it.
Take care! Changhua Hospital cares about you!

After experiencing an infection in your inner thigh that required surgical intervention and antibiotic treatment, it's understandable to be concerned about any new symptoms that arise in the scar tissue. The sudden onset of pain and redness in a previously healed scar can be alarming, and it's important to consider several factors that could contribute to this situation.
Firstly, scar tissue is different from normal skin. It is often less flexible and can be more sensitive to changes in the body. The pain and swelling you are experiencing could be due to a few reasons:
1. Scar Tissue Remodeling: After an injury, the body goes through a healing process that includes remodeling of the scar tissue. This process can take months to years, and during this time, the scar may become more sensitive or painful as the underlying tissues adjust. If the scar tissue is undergoing changes, it might lead to discomfort or even inflammation.
2. Infection: Although your wound has healed, there is still a possibility of a new infection developing in the scar tissue. Signs of infection include increased redness, warmth, swelling, and pain. If you notice any discharge or if the area feels hot to the touch, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
3. Keloid or Hypertrophic Scarring: Some individuals are prone to developing keloids or hypertrophic scars, which can become raised, itchy, and painful. These types of scars can sometimes become inflamed and may require treatment to manage symptoms.
4. Nerve Sensitivity: The nerves in the area of the scar may also be more sensitive due to the previous injury and infection. This can lead to sensations of pain or discomfort that may not be present in normal skin.
5. Underlying Conditions: If you have any underlying conditions, such as diabetes or vascular issues, these could also affect healing and lead to complications in scar tissue.
Given these possibilities, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain and swelling persist or worsen, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, chills, or discharge from the scar, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly order imaging studies or lab tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, you can take some steps to manage your discomfort:
- Rest the Area: Avoid activities that may aggravate the scar.
- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing temporary relief.
- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
- Moisturize: Keeping the scar moisturized can help improve its appearance and flexibility.
In conclusion, while some discomfort in scar tissue can be normal during the healing process, sudden pain and swelling should not be ignored. It is always best to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare provider to ensure that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed.
