Menstrual issues

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask about my menstrual cycle.
My last period started on March 10, and around April 2, I experienced some light bleeding that resembled menstruation, with a bright pink color, which lasted for a few days and then stopped.
This has been happening for several months.
This month, my period has not yet arrived, but for the past few days, I have noticed that the area around my jaw has developed large, painful bumps that do not have any openings (possibly acne?).
Is there something wrong with my body, or could this be related to hormonal imbalances?

Mengmeng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/13

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause abnormal bleeding include various elements such as environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, diet, age, and lesions in the uterus or cervix, among others.
It is recommended that if you do not have a normal menstrual period by April 17, you should consult a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or other underlying causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be concerning and may indicate underlying hormonal imbalances or other health issues. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a pattern of irregular bleeding, with a light pink discharge occurring shortly after your regular menstrual period, followed by a delay in your next expected period. Additionally, you mentioned the presence of painful, large bumps in the lower abdominal area, which you suspect might be related to acne.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that menstrual cycles can vary widely among individuals and can be influenced by numerous factors, including stress, diet, exercise, and hormonal changes. The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but cycles can range from 21 to 35 days. Irregularities can manifest as missed periods, unusually heavy or light bleeding, or bleeding between periods.

The light pink discharge you described could be a sign of several things. It might be spotting, which can occur for various reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, or even implantation bleeding if there is a possibility of pregnancy. However, since you mentioned that this pattern has been ongoing for several months, it would be wise to consider other potential causes.

Hormonal imbalances are a common reason for irregular menstrual cycles. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and other endocrine issues can lead to irregularities in menstruation. PCOS, in particular, is characterized by irregular periods, excess androgen levels, and often, the presence of cysts on the ovaries. Symptoms may also include weight gain, acne, and excessive hair growth.

The painful bumps you are experiencing in the lower abdominal area could be related to several factors. If these bumps are indeed cystic in nature, they could be ovarian cysts, which are fluid-filled sacs that can form on the ovaries. While many cysts are benign and resolve on their own, they can sometimes cause discomfort or pain, especially if they rupture or become large. Alternatively, these bumps could be related to acne or folliculitis, which can occur due to hormonal fluctuations.

Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a gynecologist or an endocrinologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly imaging studies like an ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus.
In summary, irregular menstrual cycles and associated symptoms can be indicative of hormonal imbalances or other health issues. It is essential to seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing stress, can also play a significant role in regulating menstrual cycles and improving overall health.
