Flashes of light when closing the eyes?
Hello, doctor.
I have high myopia, around 700-800 degrees.
Over the past week, when I close my eyes while sleeping (with all lights off, only natural light), I feel a flashing light in my left eye, and it feels painful as if the eyeball is straining, with pain extending to the area around my temple.
However, my right eye does not have these symptoms at all.
Additionally, there are slight blood vessels visible in the sclera of both eyes.
I'm concerned it might be due to fatigue, so I've been applying warm compresses and reducing screen time, but there hasn't been any improvement.
I have undergone a dilated retinal examination, and the doctor said there are no tears.
They also prescribed medication for fatigue and inflammation.
What could be the issue? Thank you.

Hello, if the symptoms in your left eye persist, it is advisable to seek further medical attention, as there may be other underlying issues.

More Info
Flashing lights when your eyes are closed can be a concerning symptom, especially for someone with high myopia (nearsightedness) like yourself. It's important to understand that the phenomenon you are experiencing may have several underlying causes, and while some may be benign, others could indicate a more serious condition.
Firstly, the sensation of flashing lights, particularly when your eyes are closed, can often be attributed to a few common factors. One of the most prevalent explanations is related to the vitreous gel in the eye. In individuals with high myopia, the vitreous can become more liquefied and may pull away from the retina, leading to what is known as "vitreous detachment." This can cause flashes of light, especially in low-light conditions or when the eyes are closed. The flashes are typically brief and may be accompanied by floaters, which are small specks or strands that drift through your field of vision.
Another possibility is that the flashes you are experiencing could be related to retinal issues. Although your recent dilated retinal exam showed no tears or holes, it's crucial to remain vigilant. Retinal detachment, while less common, can occur in myopic patients and may present with symptoms such as flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, or a shadow in your peripheral vision. If you notice any of these additional symptoms, it would be prudent to seek immediate medical attention.
The pain you describe around your eye and temple could be indicative of several conditions. One potential cause is eye strain, which can occur from prolonged use of screens or focusing on near objects, especially in individuals with high myopia. This strain can lead to discomfort and may exacerbate the sensation of flashing lights. The presence of mild redness in the sclera (the white part of your eye) could also suggest irritation or fatigue, which might be alleviated by proper rest and reducing screen time, as you have been doing.
Given that you have been experiencing these symptoms for about a week without improvement, and considering your history of high myopia, it is essential to continue monitoring your condition closely. While warm compresses and reducing screen time can help alleviate some symptoms, they may not address the underlying cause. If your symptoms persist or worsen, I recommend following up with your eye care professional for further evaluation. They may consider additional tests, such as a visual field test, to assess for any potential issues that may not have been evident during your last examination.
In summary, while flashing lights when your eyes are closed can be a common occurrence, especially in those with high myopia, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive about your eye health. Continue to monitor your symptoms, practice good eye hygiene, and do not hesitate to seek further medical advice if your condition does not improve or if you notice any new symptoms. Your eye health is paramount, and staying informed and proactive is the best approach to maintaining it.
