Nocturnal emissions confusion

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about nocturnal emissions.
They are supposed to occur during an unconscious state, but if I ejaculate right after "just opening my eyes" and it's during masturbation with the feeling of reaching the point of climax, and I have touched myself in between, would this still be considered a nocturnal emission? Also, having nocturnal emissions twice a day (sometimes unconscious and sometimes as described above) and 3 to 5 times a week, is this too frequent? Could it be harmful to my body? How should I address this? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Jeffery, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/16

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

Nocturnal emissions are harmless at your age.
Ejaculating 3 to 5 times a week is generally acceptable, but excessive sexual activity may indicate a loss of balance in life.
Overall, this is not ideal.

Nocturnal emissions, commonly referred to as "wet dreams," are a natural physiological phenomenon that typically occurs during sleep, often associated with erotic dreams. However, the situation you described—ejaculating while awake, especially during masturbation—does not classify as a nocturnal emission. Instead, it is a conscious act, albeit one that may occur in a semi-conscious state if you are just waking up.

To address your concerns, let's break down the frequency and implications of nocturnal emissions and ejaculation:
1. Frequency of Nocturnal Emissions: It is normal for males, especially during adolescence and early adulthood, to experience nocturnal emissions. The frequency can vary widely among individuals, ranging from a few times a month to several times a week. The occurrences you mentioned—2 times a day, 3 to 5 times a week—may be on the higher side, but it is not necessarily a cause for concern unless it is accompanied by discomfort or distress.

2. Causes: The primary cause of nocturnal emissions is the body's natural way of relieving sexual tension. Hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, can lead to increased sexual arousal and, consequently, more frequent emissions. In adults, factors such as stress, sexual thoughts, or even certain medications can influence the frequency of these occurrences.

3. Concerns About Frequency: While frequent nocturnal emissions or ejaculations are generally not harmful, excessive frequency can sometimes lead to physical discomfort, fatigue, or psychological concerns such as anxiety about sexual performance or compulsive behaviors. If you find that your experiences are interfering with your daily life or causing you distress, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional.

4. Impact on Health: There is no scientific evidence to suggest that frequent nocturnal emissions or masturbation is harmful to physical health. In fact, ejaculation can have several health benefits, including reducing the risk of prostate cancer and promoting overall sexual health. However, if you are experiencing any pain, discomfort, or other concerning symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice.

5. Managing Concerns: If you are worried about the frequency of your nocturnal emissions or ejaculation, consider the following strategies:
- Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Engaging in mindfulness practices or relaxation techniques can help manage anxiety and reduce the frequency of unwanted sexual arousal.

- Physical Activity: Regular exercise can help alleviate stress and reduce sexual tension.

- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintaining a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding excessive alcohol or drug use can positively impact your overall well-being.

- Consulting a Professional: If your concerns persist, consider speaking with a healthcare provider or a mental health professional who specializes in sexual health. They can provide tailored advice and support.

In summary, while your experiences may be frequent, they are not inherently harmful. Understanding your body and its responses is crucial, and if you have any ongoing concerns, seeking professional guidance can provide clarity and reassurance.
