Medication issues
I am taking psychiatric medications and would like to ask why I need to use Rivotril if I do not have epilepsy.
Is it due to the side effects of other medications? The medications I am using include Binin, Ubiquinone, Allegra, Rivotril, and Clozaril.
Ms. Chen, 50~59 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/17
Dr. Chen Yuemei reply Pharmacology
Hello: Rivotril (active ingredient Clonazepam) is used not only for the treatment of epilepsy but also for its anxiolytic effects.
This medication is commonly prescribed in psychiatry and is not prescribed to treat side effects caused by other medications.

Rivotril, known generically as clonazepam, is a medication commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders and certain types of seizures. It belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which work by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This action helps to calm excessive neuronal activity, making it effective for both anxiety and seizure management.
Your question about why you are prescribed Rivotril despite not having epilepsy is quite valid. Rivotril is often used off-label for various conditions, including anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and even certain types of neuropathic pain. In your case, it seems that your healthcare provider has identified a need to manage anxiety or related symptoms that may be contributing to your overall condition.
Regarding the concern about side effects, it is essential to understand that all medications come with potential risks. Common side effects of Rivotril include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and coordination problems. These side effects can be particularly concerning if you are engaging in activities that require full attention, such as driving or operating machinery. Additionally, long-term use of benzodiazepines like Rivotril can lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation. While Rivotril is not a barbiturate, it can still lead to a form of dependence, especially if used for extended periods or at higher doses.
You mentioned taking other medications, including Binin, Ubiquinone, Allegra, and Clozaril. It is crucial to consider the potential interactions between these medications. For instance, Clozaril (clozapine) is an atypical antipsychotic that can have sedative effects, which may be compounded by Rivotril. This combination could increase the risk of sedation, dizziness, and impaired cognitive function. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, as they can help monitor for adverse effects and adjust your treatment plan as necessary.
If you are experiencing side effects that are affecting your daily life, such as feeling excessively drowsy or having difficulty concentrating, it is vital to discuss these concerns with your doctor. They may consider adjusting your dosage, switching medications, or incorporating non-pharmacological interventions such as therapy or lifestyle modifications to help manage your symptoms more effectively.
In terms of your overall health and well-being, it is understandable to feel anxious about the potential long-term effects of your medications and the underlying conditions you are facing. While it is unlikely that your situation will lead to life-threatening consequences solely due to medication use, chronic stress and untreated mental health issues can contribute to physical health problems over time. Therefore, it is crucial to address both your mental and physical health needs comprehensively.
In conclusion, Rivotril can be an effective part of your treatment plan for managing anxiety or related symptoms, but it is essential to be aware of its potential side effects and the interactions with other medications you are taking. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider can help ensure that your treatment remains safe and effective, allowing you to achieve a better quality of life. If you have further concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare team for guidance.
