Corneal Injury from Tennis: Risks, Recovery, and Vision Impact - Ophthalmology

Corneal injury?

Hello Doctor, my eye was hit by a tennis ball yesterday.
It was very uncomfortable, so I immediately went to see an ophthalmologist.
The doctor said that my cornea is significantly damaged.
He prescribed artificial tears and a blue bottle of medication for staphylococcus and trachoma.
Yesterday, while I was showering, some water accidentally got into my eye.
Is there a risk of infection? Will the corneal damage heal, and will it affect my vision? I'm really worried about this because I am already nearsighted with a prescription of 750, close to 800.
Thank you, Doctor!

Xiao Ying, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/18

Dr. Wang Zhishun reply Ophthalmology

Hello, based on the description, it seems to be a corneal abrasion.
The treatment primarily focuses on preventing infection and promoting epithelial healing.
Follow-up will depend on the healing progress.

More Info

Corneal injuries, especially those resulting from sports like tennis, can be quite serious and require immediate attention. It’s good that you sought medical help right away after the injury. The cornea is a crucial part of the eye, responsible for focusing light and protecting the inner structures of the eye. Damage to the cornea can lead to various complications, including infection, scarring, and vision impairment.

Risks of Infection
Regarding your concern about the risk of infection after accidentally getting shower water in your eye, it’s important to understand that while the cornea is a protective barrier, any injury can increase the risk of infection. The artificial tears and antibiotic drops prescribed by your ophthalmologist are intended to help keep the eye lubricated and prevent infection. However, if you notice increased redness, swelling, discharge, or worsening pain, you should contact your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of an infection.

Recovery of the Cornea
The recovery of a corneal injury largely depends on the severity of the damage. Minor abrasions can heal within a few days, while more significant injuries may take weeks or even longer. The cornea has a remarkable ability to heal itself, but this process can be influenced by factors such as the depth of the injury, your overall health, and adherence to your treatment regimen. It’s crucial to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the use of prescribed medications and to avoid rubbing your eye or exposing it to irritants.

Impact on Vision
As for the impact on your vision, it’s understandable to be concerned, especially given your pre-existing myopia (nearsightedness). If the corneal injury is superficial and heals properly, your vision may return to baseline. However, deeper injuries can lead to scarring, which may affect vision. Scarring can cause distortion or blurriness, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore vision.

Recommendations for Care
1. Follow-Up Appointments: Make sure to attend all follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist. They will monitor the healing process and adjust your treatment as necessary.

2. Medication Adherence: Use the artificial tears and antibiotic drops as prescribed. These medications are essential for preventing infection and promoting healing.

3. Avoid Irritants: Protect your eye from further injury by avoiding swimming, hot tubs, or any environments where your eye might be exposed to irritants or contaminants until your doctor gives you the all-clear.

4. Rest Your Eyes: Try to minimize screen time and give your eyes a break to reduce strain.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any changes in your symptoms. If you experience increased pain, vision changes, or signs of infection, seek medical attention promptly.

Conclusion
In summary, while corneal injuries can be concerning, many heal well with appropriate care. The risk of infection exists, especially after an injury, but following your doctor’s advice and using prescribed medications can significantly mitigate this risk. Your vision may be affected depending on the severity of the injury, but with proper treatment, many patients experience a full recovery. Stay vigilant about your symptoms and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible outcome.
