Pain and Itching After Clavicle Fracture Surgery: Is It Normal? - Orthopedics

Clavicle fracture

Two weeks ago, I suffered a right clavicle fracture from a motorcycle accident and underwent surgery to have a plate inserted for treatment.
However, in the past few days, I have been experiencing pain and slight itching in the clavicle when transitioning from a lying down position to sitting up, especially when I exert some effort.
Additionally, when I use my right hand to lift objects, I also feel pain and itching in the clavicle.
Are these symptoms considered normal? Thank you.

Dr. Hong Ximing reply Orthopedics

Hello: After a clavicle fracture, it is normal to experience pain two weeks post-surgery.
Pain when transitioning from lying down to sitting is expected.
It is recommended to elevate your position while lying down and to avoid lifting heavy objects.
Best regards, Hong Hsi-Ming.

After undergoing clavicle fracture surgery, it is not uncommon to experience pain and itching in the affected area. These sensations can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process and the surgical intervention itself.

Firstly, pain after surgery is a normal response as the body begins to heal. The surgical procedure involves cutting through tissues, which can lead to inflammation and irritation of the surrounding nerves. This inflammation can manifest as pain, especially when you attempt to move or put weight on the affected arm. The pain you feel when transitioning from lying down to sitting up is likely due to the strain on the healing tissues and the surgical site. It is essential to listen to your body and avoid movements that exacerbate the pain.

Itching is also a common sensation following surgery. This can occur as the skin and underlying tissues heal. Itching may be a sign of nerve regeneration, which is a positive indication that your body is healing. However, if the itching is accompanied by redness, swelling, or discharge from the incision site, it could indicate an infection, and you should seek medical attention promptly.

The presence of pain and itching can also be influenced by the use of hardware, such as plates and screws, which are often used to stabilize the bone during the healing process. The body may react to the foreign material, leading to localized discomfort. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider if you notice any significant changes or if the pain worsens.

In terms of management, it is advisable to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions closely. This may include taking prescribed pain medications to help manage discomfort and engaging in physical therapy as recommended to promote healing and regain strength and mobility. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can be beneficial, but they should be done under the guidance of a healthcare professional to avoid overexertion.

If you find that the pain and itching persist or worsen over time, it is essential to return to your healthcare provider for a follow-up evaluation. They may perform imaging studies, such as X-rays, to assess the healing process and ensure that there are no complications, such as hardware failure or improper healing of the fracture.

In summary, while some pain and itching after clavicle fracture surgery can be considered normal, it is crucial to remain vigilant about your symptoms. Pay attention to any signs of infection or significant changes in your condition, and do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and reassurance. Your recovery is a process, and open communication with your medical team will help ensure a successful outcome.
