Rectal bleeding

Hello doctor, I have noticed that I have been experiencing rectal bleeding for the past two months.
There is a lump outside my anus, but I am not sure what it is.
I feel a lot of pain in my anus when I have a bowel movement.
Initially, I only had bleeding once or twice, but now I bleed almost every time I have a bowel movement.
Today, even when I urinated and slightly strained, I also bled.
When I had diarrhea, I looked closely and it was mostly blood.
My job requires me to stand for long periods, not sit, and I tend to go to bed very late, around midnight to 1 AM.
Should I see a doctor?

More Info

Rectal bleeding can be a concerning symptom, and it is essential to understand when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing significant rectal bleeding, pain during bowel movements, and the presence of a lump near the anus. These symptoms warrant a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional.

When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Persistent Bleeding: If you notice blood in your stool or on toilet paper consistently, especially if it has progressed from occasional to nearly every bowel movement, it is crucial to seek medical attention. This change in frequency and severity can indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

2. Pain: The pain you describe during bowel movements is another red flag. While some discomfort can be associated with hemorrhoids, severe pain could indicate other conditions, such as anal fissures, infections, or even more serious issues like abscesses or tumors.

3. Lump or Mass: The presence of a lump near the anus could be indicative of hemorrhoids, but it could also be a sign of other conditions, such as a thrombosed hemorrhoid or a more serious condition like a rectal prolapse or anal cancer. It is essential to have this evaluated by a doctor.

4. Changes in Bowel Habits: If you notice changes in your bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation, along with rectal bleeding, this could suggest a gastrointestinal issue that needs further investigation.

5. Other Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as weight loss, fatigue, or changes in appetite, these could be signs of a more serious condition and should prompt immediate medical evaluation.

Possible Causes of Rectal Bleeding
- Hemorrhoids: Swollen blood vessels in the rectal area that can cause bleeding, especially during bowel movements.

- Anal Fissures: Small tears in the lining of the anus that can cause significant pain and bleeding.

- Diverticular Disease: Small pouches that can form in the colon wall and may bleed.

- Colorectal Polyps or Cancer: Abnormal growths in the colon or rectum that can lead to bleeding.

- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause rectal bleeding and pain.

Recommendations
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to see a healthcare provider as soon as possible. They may perform a physical examination, including a digital rectal exam, and possibly order additional tests such as a colonoscopy or imaging studies to determine the cause of your symptoms.

Lifestyle Considerations
While awaiting your appointment, consider the following lifestyle adjustments that may help alleviate some discomfort:
- Dietary Changes: Increase your fiber intake to help soften stools and reduce straining during bowel movements. Foods high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help maintain regular bowel movements.

- Avoid Straining: Try to avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can exacerbate pain and bleeding.

- Warm Baths: Soaking in warm water can help relieve discomfort and promote relaxation in the anal area.

Conclusion
In summary, rectal bleeding, especially when accompanied by pain and the presence of a lump, should not be ignored. It is essential to seek medical attention promptly to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Your health is paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
