Cauliflower problem
I recently started using Aldara to treat genital warts, but I'm not sure how I got them.
I also noticed that I might have them in my mouth, specifically under my tongue and in my throat, where I feel a foreign sensation (it seems like I just started feeling this recently).
How can I prevent them from spreading? Also, if there are warts in the throat, can they be transmitted through eating? Is there a medication that can treat this? How long does it typically take to heal? Can I use Aldara in my mouth? Is it normal for there to be an increase in smegma after using Aldara? Thank you.

Hello: Regarding the introduction of genital warts (condylomata acuminata), you can refer to the article on the Dermatology Expert Health website at http://www.drskincare.com.tw/Qa/Detail.aspx?ID=154.
It is recommended that you consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist to confirm whether there are lesions of genital warts in the oral cavity and throat for early treatment.
LedaMed is not recommended for use in the oral cavity.
For detailed instructions, you can refer to Dr.
Wang Hsiu-Han's article at http://www.skin168.net/2013/10/imiquimod-verruca-planae.html.
Thank you!

More Info
Cauliflower warts, also known as condyloma acuminata, are benign growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They typically appear as soft, flesh-colored or gray swellings in the genital area, but they can also occur in the mouth and throat, as you have experienced. Understanding the treatment and prevention of these warts is crucial for managing your condition effectively.
Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: You mentioned using "樂得美" (likely referring to a topical treatment such as imiquimod or podophyllin). These medications work by stimulating the immune system or directly destroying the wart tissue. They can be effective, but results may vary from person to person. It's essential to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider regarding application frequency and duration.
2. Cryotherapy: This involves freezing the warts with liquid nitrogen, which can be done in a doctor's office. This method is effective for many patients and may require multiple sessions.
3. Surgical Options: For larger or persistent warts, surgical removal may be necessary. This can be done through excision, laser therapy, or electrosurgery.
4. Oral Medications: While there are no specific oral medications for cauliflower warts, antiviral medications may be prescribed in some cases, especially if there is a significant viral load or if the warts are extensive.
Prevention Tips
1. Avoiding Transmission: Cauliflower warts are primarily transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, particularly during sexual activity. To prevent the spread of HPV, it is advisable to practice safe sex by using condoms, although they do not provide complete protection since HPV can infect areas not covered by a condom.
2. Vaccination: The HPV vaccine can prevent the types of HPV that most commonly cause genital warts and cervical cancer. If you haven't been vaccinated, consider discussing this option with your healthcare provider.
3. Good Hygiene: Maintain good personal hygiene, especially in the genital area. Avoid sharing personal items like towels or razors that may come into contact with the warts.
Oral and Throat Involvement
Regarding your concerns about the presence of warts in your mouth and throat, it is essential to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. While HPV can cause warts in these areas, they are less common. If you experience discomfort or a sensation of a foreign body in your throat, it is crucial to have it evaluated. Eating does not typically spread the virus, but maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to prevent secondary infections.
Duration of Treatment
The duration of treatment can vary significantly depending on the individual and the extent of the warts. Some patients may see improvement within a few weeks, while others may require several months of treatment. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider will help monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed.
Side Effects and Concerns
You mentioned an increase in "龜頭垢" (smegma) after using the topical treatment. This could be due to irritation or a reaction to the medication. It is essential to maintain proper hygiene and consult your healthcare provider if this persists or worsens.
In summary, managing cauliflower warts involves a combination of topical treatments, possible surgical interventions, and preventive measures. Regular communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring effective treatment and addressing any concerns that arise during your care.
