Delayed menstruation?
Hello doctor, last month I took birth control pills, which caused my period to come two weeks early.
I had intercourse with my boyfriend on April 9 and 10, but we used withdrawal as a method of contraception.
I was expecting my period to arrive on April 16, but it has been almost seven days and I still haven't started.
I looked up signs of pregnancy online and I don't have any of those symptoms, just some breast tenderness.
My discharge is also normal, not excessive, and I don't have any lower back pain.
Could this delay be due to the stress from my recent exams? I would like to know if the birth control pills I took last time could be the reason for this delayed period.
Thank you.

Hello, a pregnancy test should be taken at least 12 days after conception for accurate results.
It is advisable to use contraceptive measures beforehand.
If your menstrual period is more than a week late, it is recommended to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Delayed menstruation can indeed be influenced by several factors, including the use of birth control and stress. In your case, it seems you have recently taken birth control pills, which can affect your menstrual cycle. Birth control pills work by regulating hormones in your body, and when you start or stop taking them, it can lead to changes in your menstrual cycle.
When you mentioned that your period was early due to the birth control pills, it’s important to understand that hormonal contraceptives can cause fluctuations in your cycle. Some women may experience lighter periods or even missed periods when they are on the pill, particularly if they have just started taking it or if they have recently changed brands or types. This could explain why your period is delayed this month, especially since you mentioned that it was expected to arrive on April 16, and now it is already a week late.
Moreover, stress is another significant factor that can lead to delayed menstruation. The body responds to stress by releasing hormones such as cortisol, which can interfere with the normal hormonal balance necessary for ovulation and menstruation. High levels of stress can disrupt the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates the menstrual cycle, leading to irregularities. Since you mentioned that you have been under considerable exam pressure, this could very well be contributing to your delayed period.
In your situation, the combination of starting birth control pills and experiencing stress from exams could be the reason for your delayed menstruation. It’s also worth noting that the symptoms you described, such as breast tenderness, can be common premenstrual symptoms or side effects of hormonal changes due to birth control.
If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test, especially if you have had unprotected intercourse. Since you mentioned that you engaged in withdrawal (pull-out method), while it is not a reliable form of contraception, the risk of pregnancy is lower compared to unprotected intercourse. However, no method is foolproof, and if your period does not arrive soon, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, both the use of birth control and stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. If your period does not arrive in the next few days, or if you have any other concerning symptoms, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide you with personalized guidance and may suggest further testing or alternative contraceptive methods if needed. Remember to take care of your mental health during stressful times, as it plays a crucial role in your overall well-being and can affect your physical health as well.
