Eyelid peeling and itching?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you a few questions.
A few days ago, I noticed small bumps near the inner corner of my eyelids, which started to itch and then became swollen, but only in the areas where the bumps are.
My originally double eyelid at the inner corner seems to have disappeared, and now there is some peeling that looks white, but it continues to itch.
What could this condition be? Initially, it was on the left side, but now there are also one or two bumps on the right side.
What might this condition be? Is there any medication I can apply? If I need to see a doctor, should I go to an ophthalmologist or a dermatologist?

More Info
Eyelid peeling and itching can be quite uncomfortable and concerning, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for effective treatment. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition that could be related to several factors, including allergic reactions, dermatitis, or even infections.
Possible Causes
1. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to cosmetics, skincare products, or environmental factors (like pollen or dust) can lead to localized swelling, itching, and peeling of the eyelids. If you've recently changed any products or been exposed to new allergens, this could be a potential cause.
2. Contact Dermatitis: This is a common condition that occurs when the skin reacts to substances that come into contact with it. Symptoms include redness, itching, and peeling. This can be triggered by soaps, lotions, or even certain fabrics.
3. Blepharitis: This is an inflammation of the eyelid margins, often caused by bacterial infection or seborrheic dermatitis. It can lead to crusting, peeling, and itching of the eyelids.
4. Eczema: Atopic dermatitis or eczema can also affect the eyelids, leading to dryness, peeling, and itching. This condition is often chronic and can flare up due to various triggers.
5. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can cause symptoms like swelling, redness, and peeling. If there is significant swelling or discharge, this could indicate an infection that may require medical treatment.
Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching. However, it should be used sparingly and not for prolonged periods, especially on the delicate skin of the eyelids.
2. Antihistamines: If allergies are suspected, oral antihistamines can help alleviate itching and swelling.
3. Moisturizers: Applying a gentle, hypoallergenic moisturizer can help soothe the skin and reduce dryness.
4. Avoiding Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants or allergens that may be contributing to your symptoms.
5. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm, damp cloth to the eyelids can help soothe irritation and reduce swelling.
When to See a Doctor
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Given the nature of your symptoms, you may want to consider seeing either an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) or a dermatologist (skin specialist). An ophthalmologist can assess for any underlying eye conditions, while a dermatologist can provide treatment for skin-related issues.
Conclusion
In summary, eyelid peeling and itching can arise from various causes, including allergies, dermatitis, infections, or other skin conditions. Treatment typically involves topical medications, avoiding irritants, and maintaining proper eyelid hygiene. If symptoms persist, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Remember to avoid self-diagnosing and self-medicating, as this can sometimes exacerbate the condition.
