Missed Period After Medication: Causes and Concerns Explained - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Missed menstruation?

I would like to ask: A few weeks ago, I held my urine, which led to inflammation, and I took medication for it.
I finished the medication on April 22 (after taking it for a week), but my period was supposed to come on the 18th.
Could the medication be the reason my period is delayed? During this time, my boyfriend engaged in finger stimulation, and it seemed to hurt inside, resulting in blood in my urine.
Is this due to an injury inside? Thank you for your answers!

C, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/25

Hello, based on your description, it is possible that you are experiencing inflammation of the pelvic cavity or urinary tract.
I recommend that you consult with a gynecologist who can assess your condition and determine whether any relevant tests are necessary to address your pain.
There are many factors that can affect the menstrual cycle, such as environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, diet, medications, age, and lesions in the uterus or cervix, among others.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Missed periods can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when there are recent changes in medication or physical activity. In your case, you mentioned taking medication for a urinary tract infection (UTI) due to holding in urine, and you are experiencing a missed period that was expected on April 18th. Let's break down the potential causes and concerns related to your situation.

Firstly, medications can indeed affect your menstrual cycle. Certain antibiotics, which are commonly prescribed for UTIs, can sometimes lead to changes in hormonal balance, potentially delaying ovulation or menstruation. While most antibiotics do not have a direct impact on the menstrual cycle, individual responses can vary. Stress, whether physical or emotional, can also play a significant role in menstrual irregularities. The stress of dealing with a UTI, combined with any anxiety about your health, could contribute to a missed period.

Additionally, you mentioned experiencing pain and blood in your urine after an incident involving your boyfriend. This could indicate a few things. If there was any trauma to the vaginal area during the interaction, it could lead to localized pain and possibly some bleeding. However, the presence of blood in your urine is concerning and should not be overlooked. It could be a sign of irritation or injury to the urinary tract, or it could indicate a more serious condition that requires medical attention.

Here are some steps you can take to address your concerns:
1. Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Given the missed period and the symptoms of pain and blood in your urine, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam and urinalysis, to determine the cause of your symptoms.

2. Consider a Pregnancy Test: If there is any possibility of pregnancy, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test. While you mentioned that your boyfriend only engaged in finger penetration, it’s important to rule out pregnancy as a cause of your missed period.

3. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience, such as changes in bleeding patterns, increased pain, or any new symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

4. Manage Stress: If stress is a contributing factor to your missed period, consider implementing stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or talking to a therapist.

5. Follow Up: If your period does not return in the next few weeks or if your symptoms worsen, make sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further testing or a different treatment approach.

In summary, while it is possible that the medication you took could have affected your menstrual cycle, other factors such as stress and physical trauma should also be considered. It’s essential to seek medical advice to ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly and effectively. Your health and well-being are paramount, so do not hesitate to reach out for professional help.
