Abnormal Vaginal Discharge: Is It a Sign of Infection? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Abnormal secretion?

I originally had very little discharge, and it was normal.
However, after having sexual intercourse with my husband last week, the discharge increased and became yellow-green in color.
Even when I don't need to use the restroom, I find myself going to change my pad.
Is this normal, or could it be a bacterial infection?

Hello, based on your symptom description, it is advised to keep the perineal area clean and dry, avoid tight-fitting clothing, minimize the use of panty liners, ensure adequate sleep, and maintain a light diet.
Additionally, try to avoid stress and prolonged sitting.
Taking a sitz bath may help alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Abnormal vaginal discharge can indeed be a sign of infection, especially when there is a noticeable change in color, consistency, or odor. In your case, the increase in discharge following sexual intercourse, along with the yellow-green color, raises concerns about a potential infection. Normal vaginal discharge is typically clear or milky and does not have a strong odor. When the discharge becomes discolored, particularly yellow or green, it may indicate the presence of an infection such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like gonorrhea or chlamydia.

The symptoms you describe—an increase in discharge, a change in color, and the need to frequently change pads—are not typical of a healthy vaginal environment. It is essential to consider other accompanying symptoms, such as itching, burning, or an unusual odor, which can further indicate an infection. For instance, bacterial vaginosis often presents with a fishy odor, while trichomoniasis may cause a frothy discharge and irritation.

Given that you mentioned having sexual intercourse recently, it is also important to consider the possibility of sexually transmitted infections. STIs can sometimes present with abnormal discharge and may require specific testing and treatment.
In terms of management, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a pelvic examination and take samples for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of the abnormal discharge. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis; for example, bacterial infections may be treated with antibiotics, while antifungal medications may be necessary for yeast infections.

It is not advisable to wait and see if the symptoms resolve on their own, as untreated infections can lead to more severe health issues, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can affect fertility. Additionally, if the discharge is due to an STI, it is important to inform your partner and consider testing for both of you to prevent reinfection.

In summary, while some changes in vaginal discharge can occur due to hormonal fluctuations or other benign reasons, the specific changes you are experiencing—particularly following sexual activity—suggest that it would be prudent to seek medical advice. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing any potential infections effectively and maintaining reproductive health.
