Seeking Treatment for Hyoid Bone Cyst: Where to Go in Taiwan? - Otolaryngology

The term "舌骨囊腫" translates to "thyroglossal duct cyst" in English?

Hello Dr.
Cheng,
I initially planned to visit you at the hospital in Taoyuan, but I heard that there are no neck ultrasounds available there.
Therefore, I feel that if I want to address the cyst on my hyoid bone, it might not be possible at that location.
If that's the case, could you please recommend which hospital and which doctor I should consult?
Previously, I visited a major hospital in New Taipei City, but since the doctor I saw was a professor, when he stated that the lump in my neck was a lymph node, the other ENT specialists at that hospital seemed hesitant to disagree.
It wasn't until I saw a hematologist that I was referred for a neck ultrasound, which confirmed it was a hyoid bone cyst.
The hematologist mentioned that it should only be addressed if it becomes inflamed or affects my appearance.
It's been over a year and a half, and I haven't paid much attention to it, but recently it has grown larger, and the discomfort in my mouth has become more pronounced.
I would like to address it now.

Thank you for your assistance!

Miss Lin, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/27

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, it is common to arrange a computed tomography (CT) scan before surgery to assess the relative position of the hyoid cyst and other structures.
Most hospitals can handle this, so you may contact a nearby medium to large hospital for assistance.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When dealing with a hyoid bone cyst, it is essential to seek appropriate medical care to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment. In Taiwan, there are several reputable hospitals and specialists who can assist you with this condition. Given your concerns about the previous misdiagnosis and the increasing discomfort from the cyst, it is crucial to find a facility that offers comprehensive diagnostic services, including neck ultrasounds, and has experienced ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialists.

1. Choosing the Right Hospital: In Taiwan, major medical centers such as National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital are known for their advanced diagnostic capabilities and specialized departments. These hospitals typically have the necessary equipment for neck ultrasounds and a team of qualified ENT specialists who can accurately assess and treat conditions like hyoid bone cysts.

2. Finding a Specialist: When looking for a doctor, it is advisable to seek out an ENT specialist with experience in treating neck masses and cysts. You can inquire about specific doctors known for their expertise in this area. For instance, you might consider reaching out to the ENT department at the aforementioned hospitals and asking for recommendations for specialists who have dealt with hyoid bone cysts or similar conditions.

3. Diagnostic Procedures: Since you mentioned that the previous diagnosis was not satisfactory, ensure that the new doctor you consult is willing to perform a thorough examination, including a neck ultrasound. This imaging technique is crucial for visualizing the cyst and determining its characteristics, such as size and whether it is causing any complications. If necessary, the doctor may also recommend further imaging studies, such as a CT scan or MRI, to get a clearer picture of the cyst and its relationship with surrounding structures.

4. Discussing Treatment Options: Once a proper diagnosis is made, the ENT specialist will discuss treatment options with you. If the cyst is asymptomatic and not causing any significant issues, a watchful waiting approach may be taken. However, given your discomfort and the cyst's growth, surgical intervention might be recommended. The procedure typically involves excising the cyst to alleviate symptoms and prevent potential complications.

5. Follow-Up Care: After treatment, regular follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor for any recurrence of the cyst or related issues. Ensure that you maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about any changes in symptoms or concerns you may have.

In summary, it is crucial to seek care from a reputable hospital with experienced ENT specialists who can provide the necessary diagnostic services and treatment for your hyoid bone cyst. Don't hesitate to advocate for your health by requesting specific tests and seeking a second opinion if you feel it is necessary. Your comfort and well-being are paramount, and with the right medical support, you can effectively manage this condition.
