Contact with cleaning agents before ovulation induction injection?

Hello, doctor.
I have a question.
I am scheduled to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) tomorrow, and the doctor mentioned that I need to attend a class first, after which I will start the ovulation stimulation injections.
However, last night I suddenly decided to clean the bathroom with a mold remover, which has a strong odor.
While rinsing, my feet accidentally came into contact with the mold remover that splashed onto the floor.
After that, I felt something unusual in my feet.
I'm concerned whether the mold remover could affect the quality of the eggs during the ovulation stimulation and potentially lead to unhealthy or malformed babies.
Thank you for your help.

Using mold removers and other cleaning agents can raise concerns, especially for individuals undergoing fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). The primary worry is whether exposure to these chemicals could negatively impact egg quality or overall reproductive health.

Mold removers often contain potent chemicals, including bleach, ammonia, and other solvents, which can be harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. While the immediate exposure you described—contact with the floor and inhaling fumes—may not seem severe, it is essential to consider the potential effects of these substances on your body, particularly during a sensitive time like preparing for ovulation induction.

Research has shown that exposure to certain environmental toxins can affect reproductive health. For instance, some studies suggest that exposure to endocrine disruptors—chemicals that can interfere with hormone systems—may negatively impact ovarian function and egg quality. However, the specific effects of mold removers on egg quality are not extensively studied, and the risk may vary depending on the chemical composition of the product used and the level of exposure.

In your case, if the exposure was limited and you did not experience any significant symptoms (such as respiratory distress or skin irritation), it is unlikely that it would have a profound effect on your egg quality. However, it is always prudent to err on the side of caution. Here are a few recommendations:
1. Consult Your Doctor: Since you are preparing for an IVF cycle, it is crucial to discuss any concerns with your fertility specialist. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the specifics of your treatment plan.

2. Avoid Chemical Exposure: Moving forward, try to minimize exposure to harsh chemicals, especially during your fertility treatments. Opt for natural cleaning products or ensure that you are in a well-ventilated area when using chemical cleaners.

3. Monitor Symptoms: If you notice any unusual symptoms following your exposure, such as persistent discomfort, respiratory issues, or skin reactions, seek medical attention promptly.

4. Focus on Overall Health: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can positively influence your fertility. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate hydration, and managing stress levels.

5. Timing of Treatments: If you have concerns about the timing of your IVF treatments after exposure to mold removers, discuss with your doctor whether it might be advisable to delay the initiation of ovulation induction until you feel confident about your exposure.

In conclusion, while the risk of mold remover exposure affecting egg quality is not definitively established, it is always best to prioritize your health and safety, especially during fertility treatments. Open communication with your healthcare provider will ensure that you receive the best possible care tailored to your situation.
