There is a white bump on the inside of my throat?
I see a small white patch in my throat, but I don't experience any pain.
I can drink water and eat normally; I just feel like there's something foreign in my throat.
I tried using a cotton swab to remove it, but it didn't help.
Will this resolve on its own? It appeared a while ago but disappeared suddenly, and now it seems to have come back, possibly due to increased fatigue from work.
Should I seek medical attention, or will it go away on its own?

More Info
When you notice a white bump in your throat, it can understandably cause concern. However, it's important to assess the situation carefully before jumping to conclusions. Based on your description, it seems that the white bump is not causing any pain and does not interfere with your ability to eat or drink, which is a positive sign.
White bumps in the throat can be caused by several factors, including:
1. Tonsil Stones (Tonsilloliths): These are calcified debris that can form in the crevices of the tonsils. They are often white or yellowish and can cause a sensation of something being stuck in the throat. They may not always cause pain but can lead to bad breath.
2. Oral Thrush: This is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. It can appear as white patches in the mouth and throat. While it may not always be painful, it can cause discomfort or a burning sensation.
3. Lymphoid Tissue: Sometimes, the lymphoid tissue in the throat can become enlarged or inflamed, leading to the appearance of white bumps. This can occur due to infections or allergies.
4. Canker Sores: These are small, painful ulcers that can appear in the mouth and throat. They are usually white or yellow with a red border and can cause discomfort.
5. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to the formation of white patches or bumps in the throat. Conditions like strep throat or infectious mononucleosis can present with similar symptoms.
Given that you have experienced this issue intermittently and that it has resolved on its own in the past, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
- Observation: If the bump remains unchanged and does not cause any additional symptoms (such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or fever), you might choose to monitor it for a little longer. Many benign conditions can resolve on their own.
- Self-Care: Maintaining good oral hygiene can help. Rinsing with warm salt water may provide some relief if there is any irritation. Staying hydrated and avoiding irritants (like smoking or excessive alcohol) can also be beneficial.
- When to Seek Medical Attention: If the bump persists for more than two weeks, increases in size, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or fever, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order further tests such as a throat swab or imaging studies to determine the cause.
- Stress and Fatigue: You mentioned that the bump reappeared during a period of increased stress and fatigue. Stress can impact your immune system and may contribute to the development of various conditions, including those affecting the throat. Ensuring adequate rest and managing stress levels can be beneficial for your overall health.
In conclusion, while the presence of a white bump in your throat can be concerning, it is often benign, especially if it is not causing pain or other symptoms. Monitoring the situation and practicing good self-care can be effective. However, do not hesitate to seek medical advice if you notice any changes or if the bump persists. Your health and peace of mind are important, and a healthcare professional can provide reassurance and appropriate care if needed.
