Should I seek medical attention if I hit my head?
Hello, three days ago I accidentally hit my head against a door frame while walking.
There is a noticeable red and swollen bump about 0.3 mm in height, with an area of approximately 20 x 20 mm, located three centimeters above my left eye on my forehead.
At first, I didn't think much of it, but over the past few days, it has developed into something resembling a normal bruise, and it only hurts when touched or pressed.
If it is just a simple external injury, it should heal on its own.
However, I am troubled by the fact that whenever I cough, I feel something unusual internally (similar to holding my breath and feeling pressure in my face).
I am unsure how long this condition is considered normal and how long it should last before I need to seek medical attention.
If I do need to see a doctor, which specialty should I consult?

After a head injury, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely, as head trauma can lead to serious complications, including intracranial bleeding or concussions. In your case, you experienced a bump on your forehead after hitting it against a door frame, which is a common type of minor head injury. The fact that you have visible swelling and tenderness upon palpation suggests that there is some localized inflammation, which is typical for such injuries.
Generally, if the symptoms are mild and you do not experience severe headaches, persistent vomiting, confusion, or loss of consciousness, you may not need immediate medical attention. However, the sensation you describe when you cough—feeling pressure or discomfort in your head—could indicate that there is some irritation or pressure in the area surrounding the injury. This symptom warrants further evaluation, especially if it persists.
The timeline for seeking medical attention can vary. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should seek medical care immediately:
1. Severe or worsening headache: If your headache becomes unbearable or does not improve with over-the-counter pain relief.
2. Confusion or disorientation: If you experience difficulty concentrating, confusion, or memory issues.
3. Nausea or vomiting: Persistent vomiting can be a sign of increased intracranial pressure.
4. Changes in vision: Blurred or double vision can indicate a more serious issue.
5. Weakness or numbness: If you experience weakness in your limbs or facial drooping, this could indicate neurological damage.
6. Seizures: Any seizure activity following a head injury is a medical emergency.
In your case, since you are experiencing discomfort when coughing, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. You can start with a visit to your primary care physician, who can assess your symptoms and determine if further imaging studies, such as a CT scan, are necessary to rule out any serious complications. If your primary care physician is unavailable, you may also consider visiting an urgent care facility or an emergency department, especially if your symptoms worsen.
In terms of recovery, minor head injuries typically heal on their own, and symptoms like swelling and tenderness can take a few days to resolve. However, if you find that your symptoms persist beyond a week or worsen, it is essential to follow up with a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance on managing your symptoms and ensure that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed.
In summary, while many minor head injuries can be managed at home, your symptoms—especially the discomfort when coughing—suggest that you should seek medical advice. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a smooth recovery. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to head injuries, as the brain is a delicate organ, and any trauma should be taken seriously.
