Development of a black mole?
Two days ago, I had an examination of my toes and no moles were found.
However, today I suddenly noticed a black mole approximately 0.05 centimeters in size on the right side of my right big toe.
It is quite dark, and I am fairly certain it appeared suddenly in the last couple of days.
Should I see a doctor quickly? Is it necessary to remove it promptly, or can I just observe it for now? Thank you, doctor.

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to make a definitive diagnosis.
If it is causing significant distress, please seek medical attention promptly.

The sudden appearance of a black mole, especially one that has developed rapidly, warrants careful consideration and, in most cases, a visit to a healthcare professional. Moles, or nevi, can change in size, shape, and color over time, and while many are benign, any new or changing mole should be evaluated to rule out potential skin cancers, such as melanoma.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can develop from existing moles or appear as new moles. The ABCDE rule is a helpful guideline for assessing moles:
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.
- Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred.
- Color: The color is not uniform and may include shades of brown, black, tan, red, white, or blue.
- Diameter: The mole is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can be smaller.
- Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.
In your case, the sudden appearance of a black mole on your toe, especially if it is darker than your other moles and has developed quickly, is concerning. It is advisable to see a dermatologist as soon as possible for a thorough examination. The dermatologist may perform a dermatoscopic examination, which allows for a more detailed view of the mole, and if necessary, a biopsy may be conducted to determine if it is cancerous.
While it is natural to feel anxious about a new mole, early detection is key in managing skin cancer effectively. If the mole exhibits any of the ABCDE characteristics mentioned above, or if it itches, bleeds, or becomes painful, these are additional reasons to seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of treatment, if the mole is determined to be benign, it may simply be monitored over time. However, if it is found to be malignant, the typical course of action would involve surgical excision of the mole along with a margin of surrounding skin to ensure complete removal of cancerous cells. Follow-up care may also be necessary depending on the type and stage of the cancer.
In summary, given the sudden appearance of a black mole on your toe, it is prudent to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist without delay. Early evaluation and intervention can significantly improve outcomes should there be any underlying issues. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your skin.
