Testicular pain?

I apologize, but I have recently noticed a lump on my right testicle.
It had appeared before and went away after a few weeks, but it has returned.
I occasionally experience a sharp pain in the right testicle.
What could this indicate? Could it be caused by excessive masturbation?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/01

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

You are still young, and your puberty has not yet ended.
Engaging in sexual activities too frequently may indicate a loss of balance in your life.
Overall, it is definitely not advisable to engage in DIY (do-it-yourself) methods; the frequency should be reduced.
Once you mature, things will improve.
The rest seems to be fine, but if you have concerns, it is recommended to see a urologist for an ultrasound examination.

Testicular pain can be a concerning symptom for many men, and it is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description of a lump on the right testicle that has reappeared and occasional sharp pain, there are several possibilities to consider.

Firstly, the lump you are experiencing could be a variety of conditions, including but not limited to:
1. Epididymal Cyst: This is a fluid-filled sac that can develop in the epididymis, which is the tube that stores and carries sperm. These cysts are usually benign and may not require treatment unless they cause discomfort.

2. Varicocele: This condition involves enlarged veins within the scrotum and can lead to a feeling of heaviness or pain in the testicle. It is more common on the left side but can occur on the right as well.

3. Hydrocele: This is a collection of fluid around the testicle, which can cause swelling and discomfort. Hydroceles are typically painless but may cause a feeling of heaviness.

4. Testicular Torsion: This is a medical emergency where the spermatic cord becomes twisted, cutting off blood supply to the testicle. This condition usually presents with sudden, severe pain and requires immediate medical attention.

5. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis) or orchitis (inflammation of the testicle) can cause pain and swelling. These conditions may be due to bacterial or viral infections and often require antibiotic treatment.

6. Tumors: While less common, testicular tumors can present as a lump and may be associated with pain. It is crucial to have any new or changing lumps evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Regarding your concern about whether frequent masturbation could be the cause of your symptoms, it is generally not considered a direct cause of testicular pain or lumps. However, excessive or aggressive masturbation can lead to temporary discomfort or soreness. If you are experiencing pain that persists or worsens, it is advisable to reduce the frequency and intensity of such activities and consult a healthcare provider.

Given the complexity of the symptoms you are experiencing, it is essential to seek a thorough evaluation from a urologist. They may perform a physical examination, ultrasound, or other diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially if there is a possibility of a more serious condition.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for the lump and pain in your right testicle, only a healthcare professional can provide an accurate diagnosis. It is important to avoid self-diagnosing and to seek medical advice to ensure proper care and peace of mind. If you notice any additional symptoms such as swelling, redness, fever, or changes in urination, seek medical attention promptly.

Testicular cancer is typically characterized by a painless, asymptomatic testicular mass. Based on your description, it seems more like the benign issues you mentioned. However, if you have concerns, it is important to see a urologist for a thorough physical examination.
