Male chest
Hello doctor, I am currently 18 years old.
Since middle school and now as I am about to enter college, my nipples have been noticeably protruding every time I wear clothes.
This has led me to wear larger t-shirts or stiffer styles, as I cannot wear fitted clothing.
This issue has troubled me for several years.
Could this be gynecomastia? If so, how much would surgery typically cost?
Xiao Yang, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/02
Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
To assess whether treatment is necessary, liposuction and electrocautery to reduce size would cost approximately 60,000 NTD, while surgical excision for larger sizes would range from 100,000 to 120,000 NTD.

More Info
Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as male breast enlargement, is a condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It can occur in one or both breasts and is often a source of psychological distress for those affected, particularly during adolescence when body image is a significant concern. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and potential surgical options for gynecomastia can help you make informed decisions about your health.
Causes of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can result from an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels in the body. Several factors can contribute to this hormonal imbalance, including:
1. Puberty: Hormonal changes during puberty are a common cause of gynecomastia in adolescent boys. This condition often resolves on its own as hormone levels stabilize.
2. Hormonal Disorders: Conditions that affect hormone levels, such as hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism, or tumors affecting the pituitary gland, can lead to gynecomastia.
3. Medications: Certain medications, including anti-androgens, anabolic steroids, and some antidepressants, can cause breast tissue enlargement as a side effect.
4. Substance Use: Alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs can also contribute to the development of gynecomastia.
5. Obesity: Increased body fat can lead to higher estrogen levels, which may promote breast tissue growth.
6. Aging: As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline, which can lead to an increase in breast tissue.
Symptoms of Gynecomastia
The primary symptom of gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue, which may be accompanied by tenderness or sensitivity in the breast area. In some cases, the condition may also cause psychological distress, leading to embarrassment or self-consciousness, particularly in social situations.
Surgical Options
If gynecomastia persists beyond puberty or causes significant discomfort or emotional distress, surgical intervention may be considered. The two primary surgical options are:
1. Liposuction: This procedure is suitable for cases where excess fat is the primary concern. A small incision is made, and fat is suctioned out to reduce breast size.
2. Mastectomy: In more severe cases, a surgical procedure called mastectomy may be performed to remove glandular breast tissue. This is typically done through a small incision around the areola to minimize scarring.
Cost of Surgery
The cost of gynecomastia surgery can vary widely based on several factors, including the surgeon's experience, the complexity of the procedure, and geographic location. On average, the cost can range from $3,000 to $8,000. It is essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in gynecomastia to discuss your specific case, potential costs, and financing options.
Conclusion
If you suspect that you have gynecomastia, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential treatment options. In many cases, gynecomastia may resolve on its own, especially if it is related to puberty. However, if the condition persists and affects your quality of life, surgical options are available to help you achieve a more comfortable and confident appearance. Remember, you are not alone in this, and many individuals experience similar concerns. Seeking support from healthcare providers can help you navigate this condition effectively.
