Swelling on the left posterior neck?
Hello doctor, about four years ago, I noticed that the left side of my neck was swollen compared to the right side.
At first, it was not very noticeable, and after seeing a doctor and getting an X-ray, no issues were detected.
However, it has gradually become larger, and now the left side of my neck feels thicker than the right, approximately from the back of my head to above the trapezius muscle.
Unlike typical tumors, it doesn't feel like there are lumps, and it doesn't hurt when pressed.
It feels normal, but I find it increasingly easy to strain my neck.
Compared to before, sometimes the swollen area hurts when I wake up from sleep, and I don't know why.
I'm also unsure how to treat it.

More Info
Understanding left neck swelling can be a complex issue, as it can arise from various underlying causes. Based on the symptoms you've described, it seems that you have been experiencing a gradual swelling on the left side of your neck for about four years, which has become more pronounced over time. You mentioned that it does not feel painful when pressed, and there are no noticeable lumps, which can provide some clues about the potential causes.
Possible Causes of Left Neck Swelling
1. Lymphadenopathy: One of the most common causes of neck swelling is lymph node enlargement, often due to infections, inflammation, or sometimes malignancies. Since you mentioned that the swelling has been persistent and gradually increasing, it would be prudent to consider whether there has been any underlying infection or chronic inflammation.
2. Muscle Hypertrophy: Given that the swelling is located in the area of the trapezius muscle, it could be a case of muscle hypertrophy or tension. This can occur due to repetitive strain, poor posture, or even sleeping positions that place undue stress on one side of the neck.
3. Cyst Formation: Conditions such as branchial cleft cysts or thyroglossal duct cysts can also lead to swelling in the neck. These are typically benign but can become noticeable over time.
4. Thyroid Issues: An enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) can also cause swelling in the neck area. If you have any symptoms related to thyroid dysfunction, such as changes in weight, energy levels, or temperature sensitivity, this should be evaluated.
5. Neck Injuries: Previous injuries or trauma to the neck can lead to swelling or muscle tension. If you have a history of neck strain or injury, this could be a contributing factor.
6. Other Conditions: Other less common causes could include tumors (benign or malignant), vascular issues, or even infections like abscesses.
Treatment Options
1. Medical Evaluation: Since the swelling has persisted for several years, it is essential to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare provider. This may include imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI to assess the soft tissues and lymph nodes in the neck.
2. Physical Therapy: If the swelling is related to muscle tension or strain, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the neck muscles, improve posture, and alleviate tension.
3. Medication: If there is an underlying inflammatory condition, anti-inflammatory medications may help reduce swelling and discomfort. In cases of infection, antibiotics may be necessary.
4. Surgical Intervention: If a cyst or tumor is identified, surgical removal may be warranted, especially if it is causing discomfort or cosmetic concerns.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Improving posture, using ergonomic supports while sleeping, and avoiding repetitive strain can help manage symptoms. Regular stretching and strengthening exercises for the neck can also be beneficial.
Conclusion
In summary, the swelling on the left side of your neck could be attributed to various causes, ranging from benign muscle hypertrophy to lymphadenopathy or cyst formation. Given the duration and progression of your symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
